Smalling is a good centre half, and has the potential to be very good. I'm not sure he'll ever be class, and he certainly isn't class yet.

I agree that he's the superior centre half when compared to Phil Jones though. Having said that Jones is the superior player in the wider sense, I just don't believe his best position is as a defender. For me he's a paler version (in both complexion and talent level) of Yaya Toure, good on the ball, gets from box to box, strength and power. He may well develop into an extremely talented central midfielder, but as a centre half he'll always be good at best.

I don't mind Smalling if it has to be said. Someone will probably prove me wrong with some anti-City quotes coming from his mouth but he seems the type that just goes about his business. Maidstone to top of the Prem League in a few years time is quite a jump.
