Photography

Well, that was stressful. A group photograph for 80+ people where the client was adamant that everyone face a certain. Add low angled direct sunlight and a cluttered background into the mix and it made for really difficult shooting conditions. I was begging for a cloudy start to the day.

Well, they'll get what they get. Can't say I didn't warn them.
That reminds me of an old school photograph. The camera had some sort of panning function and one lad appeared at both ends of the photograph.

Unless I've completely misremembered that and made it all up. :-(

Having spent the last few months with a pair of zoom lenses on my camera/in my bag (24-105mm f4 and a 70-200mm f2.8) I was wondering what folk on here carry when they're out shooting, and why?

I regularly just go out with the 24-105, as I can get away with most every day situations. The 70-200mm is a bit more specialist. I tend to treat the 24-70 as a series of primes in that I'll pick a focal length (24, 35, 50, 70, 85, 105) and move around to find a composition. Sometimes I'll just use it specifically as a zoom to fill the frame from my vantage point.

Forgive me for rambling; I just need a break from politics and football.

Likewise. I used to have a bag full of lenses. These days it's the 24-105 permanently attached and a super zoom for airshows and stuff with wings. Everything else was sold as superfluous.

24-105 is such a useful range. Mine is the Sony f4 G. There have been a few situations where I have liked a faster lens for indoor stuff, but I've just about managed with the f4 and I can't really justify buying a $2000 24-70 f2.8 as well when I can pick up a decent quality speedlight/softbox combo for >$150 if I really need to.

You're right. Unless you are selling your images then it's impossible to justify that kind of outlay. I would love a faster ie f/2.8 super-zoom telephoto for BIF and aircraft but they are mega expensive. My f/5.6 200-2500 does a pretty decent job most of the time, in fact its main limitation is probably myself!

I do a fair bit of event photography for work (unpaid) which does get used for internal publications and presentations, but I just can't justify the outlay for that, unless I can convince someone at work to buy me one ;-)

I sold all of my heavy kit a while ago now. 16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, and 70-210 f2.8, along with a couple of bodies, and other lenses. I also sold a pair of Sima DP's, and an original Ricoh GR (which I wish I had kept now).

I kept a Samsung NX mirrorless, and its pancake lenses, 16mm, 20mm, and 30mm for out and about as they are tiny, sharp and exteremly lightweight. Whole lot will fit in a pocket. I also added an 8mm f2.8 for superwide giggles.

I also kept a Ricoh GX100 compact with its EVF. Interestingly it can be set up to step zoom through 24, 28, 35, 50, and 70mm equivalents.
