Phrases once common you rarely hear today

I had the radio on recently and caught some of Steptoe & Son. What’s interesting about these radio shows, circa 1972, is that they are re-recordings of the scripts of the original TV shows from the 60s. And all the bad language has been cut out of them. I know this because one of the nostalgia TV channels sometimes shows the original black-and-white Steptoes, swearing and all.

Years ago I worked with a bloke who used to say about an attractive woman… ‘ I’d crawl a mile over broken glass just to stick matchsticks in her shit’. I trust this didn’t generally catch on.
