Pan fried rump steak, pan fried dover sole, pan fried fillet of salmon, pan fried duck breast, pan fried pork loin fillet.
I'm sorry, but nobody is going to stick any of that in a chip pan. If something is deep fried, say so. Otherwise it's safe to assume it's not been fried in an envelope, a box, a fridge or anything else other than a pan, so saying it's "pan fried" is pretentious.

Pan frying uses virtually no oil, just enough to moisten the ingredients.
