A Liverpool fan I work with had absolutely no idea that we had an era of winning trophies in the late 60’s / early 70’s. He thought that the current era was the first time we have won things
And he wasn’t taking the piss as he’s not like that, he just genuinely didn’t know
You should ask him about their dominance in the late 70s when:
- 1972 where Derby won the league with 58 points and 2nd place Leeds, 3rd place Liverpool, and 4th place City all finished on 57 points. 1 point separating 1st to second. This was the season before Liverpool won their first 1970s league title
- Liverpool won the league in 1977 by a single point with City coming second.
If he knew about their wins and near misses from their glory era, then he should know the seasons we were involved.
You'd think with this period being held in such high esteem by Liverpool fans, that they'd know the tight races they had and who it involved.
But they honestly don't know their actual history, they don't care about their real history. They only know the fictional revisionist history that they regurgitate to eachother.
I'm not surprised though, as many other fans also believe this. And also believe that United and Liverpool always dominated the league and cups between them when the dominating teams per decade were:
1890s - Aston Villa
1900s - Newcastle, Sheffield Wednesday
1910s - Blackburn (but half decade cancelled due to wwi)
1920s - Huddersfield, Sheffield Wednesday, Liverpool, Bolton
1930s - Arsenal
1940s - Portsmouth, but only 4 seasons played due to WWII
1950s - Wolves, Manchester United
1960s - No real overall since last time we had 7 different league winners in a decade. And 8 different FA Cup winners. United won 2 leagues, European, and an FA Cup so they'd edge via Euro Cup. Liverpool 2 leagues and an FA Cup, Spurs 1 league, 3 FA Cups, 1 Cup Winners Cup. City 1 league, 1 FA Cup, 1 Cup Winners Cup
1970s - Liverpool
1980s - Liverpool
1990s - Manchester United
2000s - Manchester United, then Chelsea
2010s - Manchester City (with Chelsea having moments and Arsenal in FA Cups)
2020s (so far) - Manchester City
