So I made the mistake of reading that nonsense. For an opinion piece that laments the lack of scholarly research into the topic of sportswashing, it certainly doesn't add much to the debate. Starting off with a ridiculous assumption as a conclusion (that City fans have become proxy defenders of the UAE government and the Abu Dhabi Royal family) is never a good look. It's a sort of a simplistic rehash of the nonsense that has been floating around for years.

So let’s have a look at the evidence……

Prior to 2008 no-one gave a flying fuck about Abu Dhabi
At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix no one gave a fuck about Abu Dhabi, nor the golf, cricket, or business.

But the whole idea is that an Emirate that had never really been criticised bought a club in the premier league but only after carefully considering a club whose fans would defend them.

So the club with no fans were the reason they bought them because those “no fans” would defend the emirate that had “no criticism”.

Fucking genius…….

The UAE interest comes against the backdrop of Westminster tensions over a separate Emirati deal. Last week, RedBird IMI – a joint-venture between America’s Redbird Capital and International Media Investments, an Abu Dhabi investor also backed by Mansour – announced a deal to take control of the Telegraph group. The government has indicated it will launch a public interest investigation into the newspaper deal.

The Sizewell C plant aims to generate enough energy to power 6m homes. It is backed by France’s EDF and the UK government, which has spent nearly £100m buying CGN out of the project. CGN had held a 20% stake.

Rishi Sunak hosted Mubadala’s Khaldoon Al Mubarak at a meeting of global business leaders at Hampton Court, south-west London, on Monday as he attempts to attract foreign investment to the UK.

The shame is that there are interesting angles which could be explored in a scholarly fashion. For example: Is the Mansour investment in Manchester City sportswashing? To what extent do the fans of Manchester City protect the club's owners from criticism? How did the Mansour investment in Manchester City change the football landscape? How do we place the Mansour investment in Manchester City within previous and subsequent billionaire owner acquisitions and the previous 50 years of football ownership?

Each of these would be interesting as long as they don't start with an assumption as a conclusion: Mansour is sportswashing; his investment was bad for football; City fans are AD proxies, etc etc.....

Maybe we should start a Bluemoon University to write some of these scholarly articles. :)

BBC is fucking scum head to toe. Did you see that news report about the U.A.E last night? Total fucking hatchet job, making out like making business deals at a global convention is a war crime.

Its getting to the point where I don't see how you can pay that license fee and call yourself a City fan.

Selling oil at a convention designed to reduce it's use isn't a war crime but it isn't a great look.
Your surely not suggesting they ran the story purely because City have an association with the UAE?
