Plane crash - Chapecoense FC - Awarded Copa Sudamericana - first game back today. P25

Terrible tragedy for all concerned. Classy move by the other team to ask to award the trophy to the Brazilian team. Doesnt mean much in the grand scheme but a nice gesture all the same.
Yeah like you say, its irrelevant in the scheme of things but a nice gesture. Similarly I've seen it reported that Brazilian league clubs as a collective have asked for them to be exempt from relegation for 3 years and offered to loan them players without fees next season. Another nice gesture but will unfortunately mean very little to the friends and families of those that have died.

Couldn't believe it when I saw the news this morning, especially as I watch them play Gabriel Jesus' Palmeiras the other day. Awful, Awful tragedy, can't imagine what their families, friends and fans are going through. Some very nice gestures from the Brazilian teams and Football teams around the world. RIP.

How the hell can a plane run out of fuel??
If fuel was low is there no warning lights/sound alerts??

You are right it won't help the relatives but it'll help the football club rebuild and carry on,lot's of jobs will depend on that

Hope you don't walk on a pavement, cross a road or get in a car. Higher chance of dying doing any of those thing.
mate i ride a bike (honda blackbird) every day, some say a bike is the most dangerous form of transport, but i'm willing to bet you have more chance of survival on that than dropping 1000s of feet out of the sky..

It's not possible to dump fuel on an RJ85 and if it was possible there wouldn't be time and the pilot would be trying to land the aircraft not dump fuel. From what I'm reading it seems that running out of fuel is most likely scenario. The reported electrical problems would occur when number 1 and 4 engines stop as they drive the generators. All speculation at this stage, but I very much doubt electrical problems would be the cause, it's more likely one of the effects.
Cheers for that, incredibly sad for all involved. You obviously know your planes mate, are many fitted with ram air turbines in case of engine/power failure? As a mechanical engineer in a completely different sector (no nothing about aeronautics) it's something i've always wondered.

We don't know that it did but there's lots of reasons including faulty gauges, pumps or other fuel related stuff, miscalculation (not unknown for crews to get their units of measure mixed up), unforeseen circumstances either internal or external.

And if even you do run low on fuel and your alarms work, there's not a lot you can do if you're nowhere near a runway. A plane can glide for quite a distance but that's no help if there's a mountain range between you and the runway.

According to google (the first response), the odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. If you are involved in a plane crash you apparently have a 95.7% chance of survival.

To put that into perspective the chances of dying in a car accident are one in 5,000. I suspect each time you go on a bike the odds are even worse.
