Player abuse following Euro 2020

One of my best friends wife is black as are there kids. Both are of secondary school age. Yesterday at school the youngest one was racially abused by a lad. Rightly so him and his wife are beyond fuming and have gone to the school who say they are “dealing with it”

I just feel that events of the last week probably year have fostered into society and youngsters are thinking that this is acceptable and cool to speak to people this way. It’s pretty outrageous that a kid would even have the mindset to think that they can abuse someone that one. I feel so unhelpful and wish I could do more to help him but again I don’t want to patronise them. When I was a young lad at school the thought never crossed my mind to use racial words or abuse people due to skin colour. And obviously still now. I fear that as society we have really gone backwards the last few years and this type of abuse is becoming normalised and happening far too frequently that once again a fight will be on to stop this outrageous abuse.

In my years playing and watching football hand on heart I can only recall two incidents of racial abuse. One was when I was at Gillingham in the mid 90s and Darren Moore was playing for Doncaster and the fans sang a song about him that quickly faded out and the other was at Portsmouth in the away end when a lad was taking the Piss out a few players. He was getting a few laughs from the people around him and got a bit over excited and made a comment about a black players. Straight away the people around us were on to him saying enough is enough and letting him know he had over stepped the mark. To be fair the lad apologised and gave it a rest for the rest of the match.

Now I’m naively saying that racism has gone away in the 90s and early 2000s but I honestly don’t remember it being like this. I really hope that things escalated so badly that it becomes irreversible.

It said fucking bastard and had a cock drawn next to his mouth. There were some more words that were difficult to read.

Not sure if they’ve retracted the original report, but they did report yesterday that GMP don’t believe it to be racist. Still can’t work out from the photos what it actually says tbh. Illiterate dickheads.
