Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

starting to flourish a bit now which is nice to see, if he can hit the ground running the start of next season there then he can easily be the star man, will get a couple of feisty Old Firm derbies under his belt as well, will give him a lot of good experience if he keeps this form up.
Hopefully he'll help get them through the CL qualifiers and have some fantastic experiences in the group stages which he'd probably not get with us (due to the squad rather than us not being in it, although it's going to hurt if that is the case :( )

That said he might miss the qualifiers due to the U17's competition.

For those who keep going on about it being an 18 month loan, the highlights from the Aberdeen match are here on the BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/scotland/36243544
Celtic go 3-0 up in the first half and then totally collapse at the back in the second half, that's what happens when you lose your best players (Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer) in the SPL and can't replace them with equivalent quality.

Celtic weren't going to do that and risk not getting to the CL group stage for the 3rd season running.

Just posted that imo Roberts looked miserable as fuck in the EDS & was a greedy waste of space. They know they are too good to be still at that level. Special players.

I would be absolutely depressed.

Hope there is still enough left of Barker, for Pep to bring it out.

Barker will have to want it though.

Pep has no time for those that aren't willing learners, he's not going to force anything out of him, it has to come from both sides. I hope it does.

Don't understand the comments. Looks a great decision to send him there rather than some championship side with a manager too scared to play him. Will come back in a years time much wiser having played against much more physical opponents than he will ever encounter in the EDS.

Agreed, it is very difficult to find the right balance with a loan – some fans expect the moon on a stick every time. You can’t expect a top championship side or prem team to take one of our players and play them every week and then just hand them back if they start to really perform. There has to be an incentive for the other club to take the risk and a lot long term commitment gives that incentive. If Roberts had only gone there for 3 months then he might have spent most of that time on the bench! If he had stayed here he would have spent most of the time on the bench. It’s looking like a great loan to me, he still has a lot to learn and Celtic provides a great opportunity and some stability. He can get his head down and work on his game for the next year and come back as a seasoned senior player.

I agree.

If he doesn't respond then it's his own fault. But imo, with talented people, in whatever field, they don't all respond the same way & some who are a level above others need a different stimulus than others. Some will still have it in them to do it for themselves. Some won't.

All, imo need to be promoted to a higher level & tested, challenged to perform, even if it's only for a short spell initially.

If a kid is a fantastic prodigy on the violin & he is left in the kids' orchestra with some who will never reach his level, he is unlikely to thrive.

If you give him the chance & the right teaching & he doesn't accept it & improve, then he doesn't have it.

The club can do so much for these kids but ultimately they need to deliver when they get opportunities and if they can’t get close to the first team they need to sit down with their agent and the club and look at loan moves. Kelechi has been given an opportunity and taken it. Roberts played in the away game against Tottenham – the team looked awful – he ended up going to celtic and it has been a great move. Barker played in that mid season friendly last year and looked bang average, he then had one short loan this year that was unsuccessful – something is not right and it is not necessarily all down to the club!

I’m surprised that he hasn’t been included in the latest England U21 squad when the likes of Grealish (barely played since Xmas) and Kasey Palmer (a Chelsea reserve player) have been.

Its a joke, the kid is playing with confidence and would do a great job at that level.

Quite how he hasn't been chosen, when players like the ones you name have......is puzzling.

Anyone?

If he played for the scum and on loan to celtic he'd be in the first team squad.
Without a doubt, but that's just the way it goes. If he keeps improving at the rate he currently is, he'll be in the senior squad come the next World Cup.
