Player Topic: Aleks Kolarov 2015/16

He was superb, and supremely fit yesterday. He was absolutely steaming down that left flank every time we attacked. Really impressive and it will be one of my sand out memories of this game.

But I have to say that we probably identified Ivanovic as their weak link before the game. He was never quick, but he was really exposed by Kolarov and Sterling yesterday. When Kolarov is pushed back the other way, that's when he can be exposed, but overall the criticism in the past of his game has been OTT.
 
Looking much better this season, but doesn't it make such a difference when we have a winger on the left who actually tracks back effectively?

The one thing that has really impressed and surprised me so far about Sterling is his work rate. He really does get back quickly and help defend. When we play Navas on the right and Sterling on the left you can really notice how much better we defend, because they both help out.

EDIT: In hindsight I should perhaps of posted most of this in the Sterling thread ;)
 
He's always been quality, the difference now is that he has a bit of protection so when he's out of position or makes a mistake, they aren't punished as easily as they were in the past. This is one of the things that people who criticise the Sterling fee won't understand. He helps the team in other places, starting with AK.
 
Happy to be proven wrong with this guy. Never really rated him, but these 2 games he's been superb. The whole defence has. I hope we stick with this back 4 for a few games at least now. As much as i love Zab, i thought Sagna was great too!! Keep it settled and see how it goes....
 
He has been brilliant so far and I don't just mean going forward, his defending has been top notch. He stopped numerous crosses coming in yesterday and he also won some important headers.
Chelsea are a threat from set pieces, with Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Matic and Costa and Kolarov really helped out the 2 CB's dealing with this lot.

He needs a long run of games now. I think he often struggles to get any consistency due to Pellers constantly rotating the left backs.
Clichy is class but Kolarov has earnt a long run in the team in my opinion.
 
Disappointed he didn't try to catch out Begovic yesterday on at least one of the free kicks! Begovic steals a step or two off his line for crosses and free kicks and I thought there was a time or two where zkolarov might have been able to sneak one in at the near post, or at least keep him honest and closer to his line.

That said, he has been outstanding this season and built on the solid attacking play from last season. In addition, his defending (that sliding tackle was brilliant!) has been quality, too. He was immense in the box yesterday on crosses.i think he cleared at least three of them!

I was saying exactly the same at the game re Begovic.

I'm not a Kolarov fan, even when he's played well I don't think he's been that special, but that was his best performance by a street imo & particularly as you mention, winning headers in our box. I have often wondered why he isn't like a centre back on set pieces, big hard fucker, well he was yesterday. Sterling obviously helps, but he looked quicker , fitter, more determined & his crossing was much more intelligent. It's difficult to play better than that. Great game.
 
Wonder if this new effort has got anything to do with his comfort zone of edin and jovetic going has got him re focused ?
