We shouldn't underestimate other teams figuring out how to tactically stop us playing. Without a driving force in the middle they plan around stopping Silva and it's working. Samir is only just back from injury and I think Hull made a choice of allowing him to have the ball as he was operating in areas that would not hurt them. So as much as I hate to say it, Bruce and his coaches worked us out. My real gripe is that when we play at home we play so slowly. I counted over 80 passes during one passage of play after which, the ball was passed back to Jo Hart who punted it up field straight to Dawson's head. We simply have to start faster and try to blow teams away - then, they will have to come out and leave space which we can exploit later in the game. Everything was quiet yesterday particularly the first half an hour. The guy sat behind me was discussing the price of groceries during the first ten minutes - that can't be right can it?
We have talked our way into complacency and the club need to address this quickly. We have always been progressive as a club, but recently we seem to be more focussed on a global brand and image rather than striving to do things differently particularly at first team level. Down the years I have been proud to support a club who championed our differences. We have been spoilt in recent times, but I worry that we have now settled for being a club that can - UEFA permitting - just buy our way to each level. I ask where are the younger players, where is the medium term plan for recruitment. Given that long term is the academy, why are we signing a 31 year old fullback and a 36 year old midfielder and then not playing them? Why have the club thought by giving so many long term deals is a good strategy? Surely a better one would be long term deals for only those under 25 including buyout clauses and shorter deals for the older ones? We never do that, so players can simply relax, and run down their deals whilst earning vast sums of money. Then we struggle to generate solid income from players that move on. I think the first team squad is too comfortable and happy that their every whim is looked after by the owners. We need young hungry players, identified early as wanting to achieve things. Look at how Dinho played to get noticed by his national coach. I don't see the two Porto players we signed being that hungry. In my opinion they were poor signings and I said that at the time. The English players we bought Johnson, Sinclair, Rodwell have actually done great damage to us recruiting other young English players by comments they made since they left about lack of chances, sitting on the bench etc. Finally I have a lot of time for the way Manuel conducts himself but have to ask why, when Yaya is away have we not tried to blood some other players particularly against Middlesborough when our bench had an average age of 30 and included a player who left on deadline day! Good planning for the future that one. Perhaps I am guilty of over reacting, but something is not quite right and when fans are growing ambivalent about attending games we should start to worry. Even more so when they are discussing the price of tomatoes.
