Post dog pics all you want but a defender with a working brain would have stopped that goal.

Oh so you are serious. How disappointing.

So let's run this down then hey.

  • The midfielder had absolutely no pressure on him in possession
  • Our midfield, whose defensive strategy is entire based on interceptions and forcing the opponents to pass wide, left a completely clear track to pass from their half straight into our 18 yard box
  • Our left back had his back to our goal and thus couldn't see any of the play behind him, for some reason.
  • Our centre back reacted to the pass before everybody else on the team but as the pass was on the opposite side to where the attacker was couldn't close him.
  • The goalkeeper was beaten at his near post despite defensive pressure and a tight angle

IF the left back was actually facing the play and reacting they could and should have gotten to the ball first. He should be expected to be able to do something as simple as "look at the game that you're playing".
IF the centre midfielder wasn't floating around but actually marking space properly then the pass wouldn't have been on in the first place.
IF our pressing game wasn't atrocious then the man in possession wouldn't have had the time to make that pass.
IF our goalkeeper was positioned correctly then he should never be beaten at his near post. That's goalkeeping 101 (thought to be fair it was a monster finish).

Mangala didn't do something world class which was identified a danger from a pass 40 yards away from him and get onto the opposite side of the attacker then take the ball off of him before he had his first touch. If he would have done this it would have been absolutely brilliant.

Instead of focusing on the schoolboy errors all over the pitch, you've decided to focus on something that he reasonably is not expected to win in that situation.

Agree with that assessment Damo. What are your views on his defending of the disallowed goal and his booking.

Watch the clip again. As the pass is made Mangala runs diagonally to the ball thinking he can get there, then realises that he has no fucking chance and tries to fix his error by trying to catch up with Gomis who by then has a free shot on goal and yes it was a hell of a finish. If Mangala had simply run in a straight line he'd have easily blocked the shot. I don't disagree with parts of your post. Yes our midfield is far to easy to slice open and yes Hart will think he could have done better at his near post but Mangala fucked up thinking he could cut the pass out instead of just going with the runner.

The mistake Mangala made, was that his initial movement was sideways towards the player. If he had started his movement back towards our goalmouth then he could have got his arm/shoulder in front of Gomis. Small things, but happening to frequently. I do agree that the midfield did not press or challenge the player who played the pass. I thought Delph looked like a villa player, not someone who has been given the chance of a lifetime. The players who are currently `standing in`, do not have the quality required. One the plus, a win is a win. Thanks once again YAYA.

Of course it is. A more aware defender would have seen the pass and reacted. Mangala reacts late and curved his run and ended up behind Gomis allowing him a free shot on goal.
Joe should have done better, so don't put it all on Mangala.

Comical thread, yes hes made mistakes but its hardly been an ideal set of circumstances he's encountered since his arrival......im talking rotation, injury, bizarre team selections and tactics........people jumping on his every indiscretion and exaggerating them.......its fucking odd......especially when we have other defenders at the club who are truly shocking.
