One incident summed him up for me:-

Got there quickly to a high ball and should have headed it back from where it came, but he tried to let it drop and control it and the Pool player nicked it off him and they were off on an attack with him stranded.

Simply not good enough.

Mangala looks at his best when faced with tough, big, old fashioned centre forwards. Look at how he bossed Costa. When tricky players are running a him or he is running back to goal he looks like Bambi on ice. He needed putting out of his misery last night. His confidence was already rock bottom, God knows what it will be now.

He can't get his head around this obsession we have with setting a high line for the offside trap. We only ever get that right when Kompany plays.

Having him put down sounds a bit harsh mate. Cant we just not pick him anymore?

Too many City fans are influenced by individuals in the media who long for nothing more than an expensive City signing to fail. IMO Mangala's biggest problem is the chopping and changing of partners due to injuries.
Sorry mate, I use my own eyes to judge things. I know as city fans we're always desperate for our players to succeed and I was like that with Balo till the end too, believing he'd become one of the worlds premier players out of blind faith. Mangala is gash, just let it go mate.

This has been my thought process for a while. Him & Kompany looked great at keeping big guys quiet, but he struggles far more with the small skillful players, when I saw our lineup I was hoping Benteke would start but sadly wasn't the case. Otamendi on the other hand is great at dealing with those sorts of players, I suppose dealing with Messi for a while aids that development.
One of the only guys that can actually defend against Messi, Ota took a few games but it's clear as day now why we bought him.

He's only had three proper runs in the team since he got here and they have been our three best runs in that time, the rest of the time he's been in and out of the team and both us and him have been hugely inconsistent. Last christmas when our strikers all got injured, he and Demi closed up shop at the back and we bossed everyone, then at the end of last season when we switched to 4231 and he and Demi again bossed everyone, then again at the start of this season when him and Kompany absolutely destroyed everyone they faced. Stick him with a regular partner in a settled defence and let them get an understanding going and he's excellent, throw him in with random collections of players and he panics.

He's clearly a confidence player, you can even see it in his face when something goes wrong, one mistake brings more. The last thing you want to do with a confidence player is mess them around having them worrying that they are one mistake away from being dropped. The reality is that he's never going to do well if we use him like we have been, we either have to back him and let him know he's first choice, or let him go, as being used like this is doing him or us any favours. We mess around with our defence far too much in general, it's probably my biggest criticism of Pellegrini.

His biggest weakness is he is thick. He has every single physical attribute a world class defender would have but he just isn't smart enough to play the role. He doesn't know where to position himself, when to close down, when to back off, when to dive in, when not to dive in. With Kompany holding his hand he is a decent player but when he is expected to think for himself his weaknesses show.

All of this is true, it seems to me. He is not a natural centre-half; he has never looked comfortable in the position, and it is very wishful thinking to think he will ever be good enough for a team like City. It is interesting, though, that most of this thread, with the exception of the last few pages, is in praise of Eli. No one doubts that he has exceptional physical attributes and that he's a personable, honest type of character. But it's not enough. I think it's extremely unlikely he'll be at City next season, and what we get for him will be much closer to £10m than £40m.
