Look at his athleticism here...

Clearly fits the bill in terms of being an exceptional athlete too.

So he sidelined Demichelis to a cameo & used Denayer (homegrown, takes up no space in squad). Oh no, he got rid of the kid & welcomed his mate back in.

Same way he does everything.

You know that Pellegrini doesn't make these calls right? If you want to point the finger, point it at the man responsible for sales and recruitment.

As for Pellegrini's panic buy of Otamendi, you honestly think we would allow a manager who knows he's being replaced to spend £30 million on a panic player... Come on. That is not how we are run.

As for Denayer I fully agree, in our current predicament he'd ideally be here and playing. Had Kompany & Zabaleta remained fit all season, he'd have been watching from the stands.

We would all love to see him play, but I doubt he'd play over Mangala, not because of their respective abilities but their value. Rightly or wrongly football is a business and part of a managers job is to manage his assets value.

This is unfortunately why Bony will be preferred to Iheanacho.

We need to act like Eddie 3 trees with loan conditions, after Joe Hart at Birmingham a few years ago you'd have thought we'd have learned something.

If the deal is watertight for the season then we need to make it worth Galas while to give our player back, either with gaurenteed further loans of established players, Fernando/Navas/Nasri type next season or drop them a few quid.

I don't believe that anyone other than Pellegrini makes the calls re the first team & the reason Denayer isn't around imo, is that Demichelis' move fell through & Pel is loyal to him & didn't realise Denayer would be able to play other positions as well as cb & therefore invaluable to the squad.

I don't believe we would allow Pellegrini to spend 80 mil on a player under the circumstances pre season, but 30 mil ? Absolutely. He was with Txiki, personally watching Otamendi during the South American Championships. I believe he decided to pull the trigger on that because of how bad our cbs were pre season in Germany (as it happened, Kompany sorted it during the week, & him & Mangala played a blinder v Chelsea, totally fucking the plan). Otemendi has subsequently proved a decent signing, & keeping Denayer would have strengthened us even further.

Players entering/leaving the academy, is outside Pel's control, yes, but once a player is designated to join the first team squad, I believe Pellegrini has 100% say in what happens to him, & that he picks which players should be promoted to his squad or sold from it. I'm sure he listens to the opinions of the coaches, but I believe he is the one who decides whether or not to use these kids &i also believe he will on some occasions be going against the advice given by the coaches in that respect. Quite often I rcon. I think we will see a big difference next season in that respect.

But this is perfectly the correct procedure imo. Pellegrini should have total control of first team matters & it would be badly wrong if Txiki or the academy coaches had any power to change his decision. It would make his job impossble & his position untenable. I believe Txiki's assertion that this does not happen, & that Pellegrini is 100% in control of first team affairs.

As regards assets value, let's see how much that matters when Pep Guardiola takes over. I recon, not very much, but we'll see.

There were rumours that Mangala was supposed to be leaving as well (on loan I think) but he turned that down which left us with 5 CBs and rather than having Denayer just sitting on the bench most of the season, the decision was made to loan him out for more experience. With hindsight that was probably a mistake due to the number of defensive injuries (and MD's drop in form) that we have had but at the time I could understand why such a decision was made. We started the season looking very solid defensively and if we hadn't had so many injuries, Denayer would most likely have had very little game time.

No doubt he'll get his chance to fight for a place next season.

It shouldn't matter one bit if Denayer can play other positions.

We want him to develop in his natural role as a CB. Due to the competition here a first team spot would not be guaranteed and it is crucial that he kicks on from his good season at Celtic. Galatasaray is a very good move for him. An upgrade from Celtic, playing in the CL and for a team who can compete for domestic honours.

The last thing we want is for him to end up like Phil Jones who due to be played everywhere is bang average and not outstanding in any position.

Under Pellegrini that's true. Under many other managers, they would try to get him into the team when possible & he woukd take over Demichelis' place (who has admitted he wanted to leave). But Pellegrini is going himself, so it's easier for him to use Demi.

For what it's worth, I think Demichelis may well be ok if he plays every week. But he was 'gone' & happy to go, so no way should he have expected to regain his place without having to fight Denayer for it imo.

You do know that he's playing right back at Galatasaray ?

I heard that he started a one or two games there but I assumed that he was just covering injuries.

The club have dropped a bollock if they have willingly let him go out on loan to a club who are not going to play him in his proper position.

It doesn't matter unless it's a position he can't play. It's been happening with most kids for the last 100+ years. Where is John Stones playing ? Paul Lake ?

It's just a rule made up by people on here.

I'm still not certain he'll end up a centre back.

John Stones perfectly backs up my point. There is no chance he will start at RB ahead of Coleman and is simply covering in his absence.

It's like when Sagna has played at CB. You don't not buy a proper natural CB because someone can fill in there. City would know by now if they seen Denayer as a right back and even if they do he wouldn't be starting ahead of Zab or Sagna.

Our youngsters are competing with some of the best players in the world. How is Denayer going to dislodge Zabba or Otamendi when his position constantly changes?

By your logic not only are we expecting out youth to compete with top class players, but also in a number of positions.

Zaba has been missing all season, Denayer is homegrown. If he does well he'll be one of the first names chosen, as he enables us to balance the squad. If Denayer does well next season he'll become one of the main players & soneone will be sold. If not, we lose nothing.

It really is a no lose situation & somehow we have managed to miss out on it.

Next season will be different, & not just with Denayer. Just watch.

You're basing your opinion on hindsight though.

At the start of the season no one would have expected Zab and Kompany to pick up the injuries they have. Also, on form Zab is the best RB in the league and Sagna has done very well this season so I simply do not see where these starts for Denayer are coming from.

Unless you think it would have been more beneficial to keep him solely for the off chance that one of our players gets injured.

I rate Denayer and think he is a top prospect but he is nowhere near the level of Zab and Sagna at RB or Otamendi or Vinny at CB. He has had one very good season in the SPL and still has a lot to prove. Pellegrini and Txiki were more than justified in their decision to loan him out at the beginning of the season based on the competition for places we currently have.

No I'm not going off hindsight mate. I expected VK to get injured & I figured Zaba would struggle after last season. Sagna has been a pleasent surprise, which few expected, I expected him to struggle as well, but he has raised his game, but no way should we have been relying on that.

I had huge arguments on here about it & there were others who watch Denayer play regularly, who were saying exactly the same as me. I think there is a decent chance he would be as good or better than any of those players in any position, & possibly Fernando's too, but the only way you ever find that out with kids is to play them. Other clubs have done it & are benefitting from the increased squad size that brings, whilst we moan about injuries.

I believe Denayer has one potential weakness which is he could need a bit of time to come to terms with the Prem aerially & that needs to be tested. Eventually I expect him to be brilliant at that too (for his size). But imo he is the best 1v1 defender at the club, bar none & yards faster, quicker acceleration than any of them. If I had to put my life on a player stopping Sterling in a run 1v1 for example, I'd be dead if it was any of the others, & Denayer would have him 9 times out of 10. He is also a miles better footballer than any of our first team defenders & has nerves of steel under pressure.

Letting him go was a huge mistake imo, with or without hindsight & imo is purely down to the manager. If he had that choice again, he'd keep him & he'd now be in the team .

Got chatting to a couple of Celtic fans at the airport on Saturday, both of them said what a fantastic player he is.
