Calf injury I think. It would seem he felt pain in it during the Villa match and didn't turn out for Belgium due to it.

Not sure why anyone's surprised about his performance. The back end of last year, although he'd had a decent season in general, it was obvious his legs had gone and his overall performances were dipping. Playing the odd 10 minute cameo in midfield this season was hardly going to have him fit and firing to go in a game of this magnitude.
Has been a great signing and done very well after a poor start. Now's the time to say thanks for everything and let him retire to Argentina. Unfortunately due to Denayer being away and Kompany missing games it seems he's here for the rest of the season. Hopefully as a back up only.
