I think Pellegrini is managing him really well through the occasional rotation and careful substitutions. He's making sure he doesn't get burnt out and doesn't get a huge amount of scrutiny from the press. One poor game and the press will be all over him. Last night he was brilliant and looked confident and made for the big stage. Took his goal well, a sign that his finishing is improving and to get his first European goal will be fantastic for him.
Looking at the European experience, I think our improved performance last night is down to the number of European games many of our side have now played. Fernandinho has played 91 games in Europe overall, Fernando has played 61 and Yaya 78. To put that into perspective; Busquets has played 69, Rakitic 60 and Iniesta 116. We've got plenty of nous and experience to see games out now. Plenty of big game players too. Sterling made his 22nd appearance in Europe last night at age 20. He's got so much experience for a young lad and is starting to show how good he can be. It's crazy how young he is and scary just how good he might become in the future. We've potentially a real world class talent on our hands.
