I just think a Mangala/Denayer partnership is a bit too inexperienced for these opening games. We certainly have a major problem for those early matches.

Fair enough, lots of different opinions on here today. For my part, in watching players on the pitch they look like the two most likely players to keep the ball out of our net, for better or for worse. Would like to see them start at Hawthorns accordingly.

The performance by Vinnie today was absolute horrible. Possibly the worst half of a defender I've ever seen. I'm not happy to say, but I'm starting to believe Kompany is past his best, unfortunately.

Demichelis who is probably half the athlete Kompany is seems to do OK playing like this. Agree its harder and the odd goal that occurs directly because of an exposed back four you can forgive him for. But he's just doing nothing right at the moment, no aspect of his game is in good shape. Can't blame pellegrini entirely for that

hahaha today was just a run out and anybody starts to point fingers at players are just glory fu*king hunters and a joke when the first game comes up and we bag the 3 points lets back slap the players and manager for using pre season to work out the shape and getting players fit
Mate if we bag 3 on next Monday the moaners on here will be no where to be seen.

You've got no chance of getting through to them mate. Plenty have their minds made up and will wait to pounce as soon as there's any hint of a mistake.
This is the lad who's captained us to two titles and is respected throughout the game in Europe.
Not our fans though, nah, they'd rather write him off as finished after a preseason in which he's been stop start and days after becoming a dad.

Well as 'hints' go that first 45 minutes from Kompany was a pretty fucking huge one.

I wouldn't write him off as that would be an overreaction but there is some sorting to do defensively and it needs shorting sharpish. Mind you its been pretty much the same last two seasons so I ain't holding my breath.

There's some legitimate discussion about high lines, very few minutes playing next to Mangala, whether or not they're both front-footed, etc... but at the end of the day, Kompany in his current form, based on that appearance, is incapable of simple man-on-man defending. You can't chalk up everything to the excuses we've paraded out. He's just off at the moment. Watch the 3rd goal again. He'd struggle playing 5-a-side against quality opponents, he'd struggle with Chelsea's approach to defending, he'd struggle with Ramos next to him... he's struggling to defend players one on one right now, and the guy needs some time on the sidelines to get it right (which I'm sure he will).

I agree with this. He's getting the absolute basics wrong ATM. Simple things that centre backs get right in the semi professional game.

His head has well and truly gone. He needs to sit on the sidelines until he finds the answer.

Trying to play him out of it alongside Mangala is not the answer.

Right now Denayer looks like the best CB we have on our books.

People putting his form down to becoming a dad over a week ago??.. Didn't Lampard play in a champions league semi-final a week after losing his mother?..And score.

I don't give a fuck about pre-season results but in the last one before the serious stuff starts I do expect to see a bit of organisation and shape and it wasn't there in that first 45 minutes, especially as that was probably the back 4 that Pellegrini felt he would start at WBA with Clichy injured and Zab and Demichelis not match fit.

Fuck me have you just been born, How the hell are you posting? Seriously though are you for real?? It was a bad performance but the worst you've Ever seen? Ever? I take it you've never heard of charvet, Paul Richie, thatcher, mettomo, mills, I could go on for hours/days.

Jesus Christ.

We're playing a high line and none of the defence apart from Demichelis can play the offside trap effectively. No surprise that when he is at cb any of his partners look better as he leads/holds the line. The amount of offsides that are called when he plays must be miles higher than when he is missing.

Pellegrini needs to ditch the high line and we should hold a deeper line when we lose possession. We don't press effectively from the front so what is the point in the high line? It leads to a hole slew of defensive catastrophes.
