Maybe because none of the other 3 are in the same league as Kompany?

Also, we have a home grown player who cost us <6 million, who unfortunately happens to be out on loan.

I think it is lack of leadership and organisational skills as much as missing VK's obvious talent. That together with a manager who knows or cares little about setting up a defence puts us in a bad position when he is missing. With respect to his injuries they are indeed becoming more frequent and seem to last longer. Also they are of a nature that game management and a special training regime would most likely have limited positive impact. Sadly, I am fast coming to the conclusion that we need a new defensive talisman. That however is easier said that done.

Interesting comments by Joe this morning. Basically the 4000 games and age have taken its toll and basically the days of expecting a full season or anywhere near are gone.
Astonishing comments when you consider Vinny's contract runs until the summer of 2019 when he'll be 33. Who else would buy him now?

Which is fine by me. I'm sure the club are thinking along those lines as well and are more than happy to keep him knowing that getting 25/30 games a season is better than selling him off. The presence he has around the club and the inspiration to our youngsters is undervalued by a lot of our fans who would rather paint him as somebody who couldn't give a fuck about anyone but Belgium.
He's our best CB right now. Buying another top quality CB next season and replacing Mangala would leave us with Kompany, Denayer Otomendi and new player. That for me should be more than good enough to push for silverware on all fronts.

so you will be happy for our captain and the leader of the team to play ONLy 25-30 games a season and miss half of it ????? with all my respect but for me is a no....if his condition will be the same in the near future then it's pain me to say but we need to look at the future and see that maybe he is will not be part of it....we need to start do this and go for the next big thing in terms of CB....we can;t go on and on forever with 1 of our most imp. players playing 5 games and them miss 10..

Yes, more than happy.

We can all agree that Vinny has been and will continue to be, a top defender. However we probably need an equally good 60 games a season man.

Not sure yet if that is Otty. Too early to tell. Pretty certain it's not Mangala though. Hope to see a CB squad of VK, Denny, Otty and A N Other next season.

Look what Pep did with Boeteng. Maybe he can do the same with Mangala?

That would be great. But I think the difference is that from day one Boeteng wanted out. He resented being asked to play right back and basically went on strike.

Mangala is, to his great credit, making every effort.

It's a shame really but VK is sadly becoming the equivalent to the out of stock display item in a shop that you can't have because it's the display item.

Absolutely ludicrous from joe, I don't think the hierarchy will be best pleased....

I get the loyalty towards the captain, he's literally been the heartbeat of our team for 6 years, however, knowing vinny, an extremely intelligent lad, he will also be a realist, he'll know himself that he won't be here in 2019!!!
