is it a waste of a defensive player.i have only ever seen a couple of goals go under the wall so surely it would make more sense to have him mark someone

Juventus got knocked out of the Champions League by Porto because they did not have anyone laying down.

Kevin de Bruyne has done it a couple of times alone.
Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Coutinho, Alonso, Neymar, Rivaldo, Oliveira, Cazorla etc. all done it.
I think it is (or would be if players hadn't started lying behind the wall) more common than you think.

Considering only 1 in 20 free kicks are scored in the Premier League, I'm amazed teams don't take more advantage of being able to bypass 5/6 players in one go, and play around the wall.
