Players lying down behind the wall on free kicks

Sure - or the ones where it's played to a runner at the side, who plays the ball in behind everyone.

I'm sure they're tough to score from too, but surely if a team tried something unusual from half their free kicks, it wouldn't take long before that team faced smaller walls, as defenders were moved to cover other options. Most teams score on average just one free kick a season, so it's not like it's a huge risk to try.

Maybe clubs have worked out that it's even less likely to result in a goal, or maybe ego driven free kicks are a key motivation tool for tricky forwards :)

is it a waste of a defensive player.i have only ever seen a couple of goals go under the wall so surely it would make more sense to have him mark someone
It will last another season or two and we’ll look back on this in a few years and laugh about the time football teams did the “draught excluder” for absolutely no bloody reason whatsoever.

In my 33 years watching football, I’ve seen Ronaldinho score under the wall twice and de Bruyne once and that’s it. There would be more of a case to put a defensive wall up at the front post on corners.

It’s a bloody nonsense!
