Players signed by City after fine performances against us.

Re: Players signed by City after fine performances against u

A Shrewesbury keeper must be 25 years ago, played against us in a 2-2 draw at Maine Rd and had a blinder, signed and played a couple of seasons in the reserves where he was pisspoor then just disappeared.

I'm struggling for a name ....think he was called Green.

Good save from Green in the last minute from Brightwell - in the game Carl Griffiths netted twice.
Must admit to being oblivious to the fact we then signed the keeper.
(I do recall I went to see New Order / Happy Mondays straight after the game at GMEX)

Yeah that's him and the game I was thinking about.

Just had a Google Ron Green seemed to play for just lower league sides and there are no gaps in his career or any mention of City.

Is it possible to have a brain fart from so long ago?

Tueart, Horswill and Watson from the Sunderland Cup winning side of 1973 after they beat us 3-1 in a 5th round replay at Maine Road.

Tueart and Watson became stars for us. What happened to Mick Horswill?

I watched the reserves a lot in those days. I'm fairly sure that Ron Green did train with us and I have a memory of him playing a reserve game. I think in 1988/9, we were looking for a reserve 'keeper and I think we in effect gave him a trial. We ended up signing Paul Cooper, who'd spent most of his career at Ipswich but by this time was in the reserves at Leicester.

Cooper played only 17 senior games at City, but there were some big ones when Andy Dibble was injured in the promotion run-in, including the promotion-clinching game at Bradford. And of course he also stood in for Dibble in the famous 5-1 against United in September 1989.

I started going to Maine Road in 1975, so I don't remember Horswill. The Internet suggests that he moved on to Plymouth and then Hull, having featured in only 14 league games for City. A couple of Blues have told me that, based on performances in the Mackems' 1973 Cup campaign, Horswill was regarded by many as a more exciting acquisition than Dennis Tueart, with whom he arrived. Just didn't work out for him, maybe because the manager who bought him, Ron Saunders, was sacked almost immediately afterwards. Could it have been that Tony Book simply didn't fancy him?

We let Tony Towers go to Wearside in that Horswill/Tueart deal and Towers was a very successful buy for Bob Stokoe, going on to play for England. In hindsight, maybe we should have bought Tueart and kept Towers.

Was reminded of Lee Peacock on another thread!
I was one of the 3007 to witness his two goals in City's only Freight Rover trophy game (or whatever it was called then) for Mansfield at Maine Road.
Was it the ZDS (Zenith Data Systems) Trophy?

A few years ago when we still had Gary Owen and co presenting the Legends Football Phone in Horswill was the Sunderland representative in the Northeast's equivalent show.

No, just checked, it was the Auto Windshield Cup. The cup for the teams in the old 3rd and 4th division which at some point was the Freight Rover and Johnstone's Paint Cup.

The Zenith Data Systems started out as the Full Members Cup and became the Simod Cup and then the ZDS Cup.

Mick Horswill became a drinking partner for Rodney Marsh and a few others, and after his blistering 14 games in two years, he went down to Plymouth.

I'd forgotten about him until I was in the North East and heard him on the radio with Malcolm McDonald and someone else.

He was hosting a show about the forthcoming fixtures, and he came across quite eloquently, but it was a few years ago now.
