Yeah that's him and the game I was thinking about.
Just had a Google Ron Green seemed to play for just lower league sides and there are no gaps in his career or any mention of City.
Is it possible to have a brain fart from so long ago?
I watched the reserves a lot in those days. I'm fairly sure that Ron Green did train with us and I have a memory of him playing a reserve game. I think in 1988/9, we were looking for a reserve 'keeper and I think we in effect gave him a trial. We ended up signing Paul Cooper, who'd spent most of his career at Ipswich but by this time was in the reserves at Leicester.
Cooper played only 17 senior games at City, but there were some big ones when Andy Dibble was injured in the promotion run-in, including the promotion-clinching game at Bradford. And of course he also stood in for Dibble in the famous 5-1 against United in September 1989.

Tueart, Horswill and Watson from the Sunderland Cup winning side of 1973 after they beat us 3-1 in a 5th round replay at Maine Road.
Tueart and Watson became stars for us. What happened to Mick Horswill?
I started going to Maine Road in 1975, so I don't remember Horswill. The Internet suggests that he moved on to Plymouth and then Hull, having featured in only 14 league games for City. A couple of Blues have told me that, based on performances in the Mackems' 1973 Cup campaign, Horswill was regarded by many as a more exciting acquisition than Dennis Tueart, with whom he arrived. Just didn't work out for him, maybe because the manager who bought him, Ron Saunders, was sacked almost immediately afterwards. Could it have been that Tony Book simply didn't fancy him?
We let Tony Towers go to Wearside in that Horswill/Tueart deal and Towers was a very successful buy for Bob Stokoe, going on to play for England. In hindsight, maybe we should have bought Tueart and kept Towers.
