Not what I read at the time. I read an interview with Rush where he said he was clearly advised by Alan Oakes that going to liverpool would be far better for his career than going to City. I haven’t had that corroborated by Oakes or Rush, and appreciate you can’t believe everything you read in the papers

I always thought Dean Saunders, Tommy Johnson, Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch were City type players.

I haven't seen that interview and got my version of events from comments by Oakes several years later. Of course, you're right, people don't always tell the truth and who knows where the revisionism can come in. It could be Rush wanting to reinforce a narrative that Liverpool was always the right club for him or Oakes not wanting to admit that he steered such a great prospect away from City. In any case, it was always a stretch that we'd spend more on a striker straight after paying £1.25 million on Kevin Reeves, while Rush didn't do too badly at Anfield, I suppose.
