Plummeting insect numbers 'threaten collapse of nature'

Everyone slated MJ but he was right about humans destroying the planet,so many animals have gone exinct with loads more on the edge,we only have ourselves to blame

Ah yes, MJ. I loved it when he sang I'm forever blowing Bubbles

It’s all so complicated though. For everything that declines something else wins. Less birds eating bugs of one type might mean more bugs eaten by rats so more rats and less birds. Less flowers may mean more grass. Who knows. There’s been a semblance of balance in each ecosystem for a while and many will tip towards a different balance but maybe that’s a disaster for humans of maybe not.

Maybe it doesn’t matter if technology moves to manage nature and weather and life and anything that we assumed was uncontrollable in the past.

We may be on the verge of a golden age? All most of us can do is prepare our kids as best we can for the future (woman about the end of the world is probably a waste of time).

Trouble is most western governments change after a few years. So doing something expensive and inconvenient that might take many years, like real effective change, is a very low priority. Its our kids and our grandkids who will suffer from us, eventually.

Since the dawn of civilization, we have caused the loss of over 80% of all wild mammals. In the last 50 years alone the populations of all mammals birds and fish have fallen by an average of 60 % and that is pretty piss poor reading. We will not change because our needs are greater than theirs and there lies the crux.

Have a peep at this:
There are more than a million species of insect, compared with just 5,400 mammals, and they are the cornerstone of all terrestrial ecosystems. Without them, you get what scientists call a “bottom-up trophic cascade”, in which the knock-on effects of the insect collapse surge up through the food chain, wiping out higher animals. And without healthy ecosystems, there is no clean air and water.

Not a big lover of insects but if the planet needs them to maintain our delicate eco system then so be it (exluding spiders) who remain an abomination and an affront to common decency. It's not this generation that will suffer but the generations still to come and makes for dreadful reading. It's all over the press at the moment but insect decimation and decline has been ongoing for the last 100 years.

A beautiful video encapsulating all that is good on our home planet yet we stand to lose it all.

No. Less numbers of insect species leaves the entire insect population more exposed to weather and disease (less diversity) and insect numbers dropping too low means the majority of plant life dies and so do we.

I dare say the Trafford cockroach population has waned somewhat over the last few years, this species however does fuck all for the eco system and will hopefully die out in the not to distant future...

Perhaps they should be culled for the good of humanity, insects, football, you name it. Everyone would benefit.
