Plusnet

Have you checked the VM forums for issues in your area? I've just dumped them because speed at night was down to below 10mb. The Animated Gif thread was soooo slow. I used to have to use my 3G connection instead.

The issue for me, they finally admitted, was over utilisation, and I was told the best thing was to just use the internet two hours later and I got a £1 credit.

The issue still isn't fixed in my area and while the majority of VM customers get super fast reliable speed, if you're in one of the problem areas, you might as well cut your losses now. Essentially parts of the network are knackered.

Not knackered and it's being expanded, will be the biggest fastest
Sorry to hijack this thread but I'm hoping someone can answer what is probably a dumb question about virgin as I plan to transfer my broadband to them. They offer to have you up and running in four days and to send all the equipment for you to set it up yourself. Does tis assume that they already have a connection to your house? I thought that they used cables other than the ones going in to the phone line.

We had virgin at our house when we moved here over 7 years ago but switched to sky and I'm pretty sure that their old box on the wall and cables are not really now around.

Self installs are reliant on the fact the cables are still intact in your property, if not go for a manned install and they will fit new ones.

Will be (when)?

I pay to use it today.

Not bothered about the fastest, I want the most stable. If their technology is the best, why did I regularly get 10mb dload (and very rarely over 30) on a 50mb service from VM (Ethernet connection), but get min 40 on a 70 with BT (only tested wireless, Ethernet probably faster). No difference in price.

You're right, optical cable should be faster than copper, but if it ain't improved after waiting a year, when will it? The answer is the infrastructure near me, with Virgin, is knackered.

Plus their 2mb upload is laughable.

On my ten year old wireless dongle.

I'm happy for you. I get 19mb upload with BT. It really makes a difference when working from home using VPN.

It is well known that some areas of Virgin's network are not functioning well. They told me that and the customer forums are full of problems specific to these areas. Unfortunately I ended up in one and couldn't wait for a fix date which kept getting pushed back.

I am unfortunately with Plusnet too, last year the thing got turned off by them for a month. After mithering them all the time about it they turned it back on only to load things at bloody snail pace. I found out I was getting 2mb in my front room (where the router was)! But a whopping 8mb at the main box, so the wiring is knackered. All was fine-ish, at least in comparison to before once I plugged into that box until the past two weeks where it's gone back to being as bloody slow as before! I've just started using BTwifi while I wait it out with these useless gits 'cause even though it's probably two doors down with the box, it's a hell of a lot quicker.
