I think it is done to ensure most bars are shut by the time we arrive back. OK, there is always somewhere open and those wanting a drink at 12.30am will find it but, imo, that's the reason rather than possible violence.

The lock ins are a pain but it’s pretty much guaranteed anywhere in Mediterranean Europe, so to be expected really.

Apart from that, I thought Lisbon was one of the better set ups. Metro straight back to all the city centre stops in less than half an hour and plenty of bars open until at least 2 am.
