Political relations between UK-EU

Went to a chippy in Holyhead once when we were on holiday in Trearddur Bay quite a few years ago. Some very strange characters lurking about in the vicinity. I suspect it’s not changed much.

we went to costa in Holyhead. Turns out it wasn’t a real Costa. They’d just nicked the sign from somewhere else.

Rather enjoyed the Govt stating it's what we voted for, because they are right, we did.

Pass the popcorn.

‘A govt spokesperson confirms Brexit responsible for HGV driver shortage saying

"The British people repeatedly voted to end free movement and take back control …employers should invest in our domestic workforce instead of relying on labour from abroad.’

You still won’t answer the question will you? Also technology is an ideal based on best case scenario. Think about a computer driving a lorry or a bus. It can’t replace human decison making. You might not need a driver as such but you will need human interaction.

Already happening in our local supermarket .... more scan it yourself tills have opened and we are now down to 5 staffed checkouts ..... the staffed checkouts no longer give cash back but guess what ? The scan it yourself tills do.

Ultimately, like our EU counterparts, we need to train more drivers and attract more people to the industry, the government could make training free for the next 3 to 6 months to get the ball rolling.

Naive to think that the Conservatives would ''make training free for the next 3 to 6 months'' ..... they couldn't even agree to feed hungry children.

This isn’t just a UK problem despite what the media would like you to believe.

Broadly commercial driver vacancies have remained static pre and post Brexit, up 12% and this increase is also being reflected in the EU. Causes? The EU has exactly the same issues as the UK:

Ageing drivers
Lack of new drivers
Poor wages
Poor conditions

What Brexit has done is make it more complex for EU drivers to drive over here and make short otherwise empty runs between drop off and collection points. Generally there appears to be a level of reluctance on EU drivers doing UK destinations due to red tape etc. I believe the government has relaxed some of these rules but it remains to be seen if this has the desired short terms outcomes.

Ultimately, like our EU counterparts, we need to train more drivers and attract more people to the industry, the government could make training free for the next 3 to 6 months to get the ball rolling.

This assumes we have the labour to train and fill these gaps. Like most European countries we have a labour shortage. Previously, newly accessioned countries helped fill the labour gap, but their economies have grown as a function of being in the Single Market and as recipients of EU funds, so people are now inclined to stay put. Romania is increasing its non-EU immigration quotas to fill gaps.

The UK situation is exacerbated by Brexit, plugging into a Europe wide network of supply chains helps mask the shortfalls, but the reality is the UK does not have enough people. Europe the same. Germany took in nearly a million refugees in 2015, largely assimilating them into the economy and that still isn’t enough.

The US depends on undocumented labour, while still screaming about it. The UK is in denial mode as is a lot of Europe when it comes to ‘outside migration’, but our economies and growth need people.

It’s a reality we are unwilling to face.

oh i'ts faced all right .... by being racist and voting to leave .... there was never any upside to brexit other than being able to ''kick out the forriners''

Local KFC shut last night as no stock.
We were a net exporter of chicken to Europe, and had enough for ourselves as well.

We can't process enough for our own consumption now, and exports have dried up.

Welcome to Brexit Britain. £350 Million a week to the NHS, eh?

The brexit negotiations began, for the first time in history anywhere on the planet, with a country, the UK, with free trade agreements in place, arguing for barriers and tariffs to be put in place to hinder trade.

It's insanity, in the sense of the word, and let's bear in mind Brexit hasn't really begun yet. There is a lot worse to come.

Import checks will have an affect, and they haven't started yet.

The only country in the world to impose sanctions on itself

The reality is that we don't need more people, we need more people who are willing to do the jobs that most people aren't.

I walked past my local the other day and they have a sign up saying bar staff wanted, 20hrs a week. Bare in mind you have to be 18 to work behind a bar.... Who is going to do this job? Kids at 18 are all off to uni in 2 weeks and who else is going to work 20hrs a week on minimum wage? You can't exactly pay the rent on that money.

This whole thing about talent shortages is rubbish because the graduate market is completely saturated and not the other way round.

Of course we need more immigration to fill this gap but that's because how many kids nowadays aspire to be or will even consider being a HGV driver? The bottom has fallen out and for the indigenous folk there's no respect or dignity anymore in unskilled trade and that's the problem.
