Political relations between UK-EU

The Euro swaps clearing through London is a technology issue. There was no reason to build a platform outside of London to do it so it was always going to just be done in London. Until brexit gave the EU the reason to force the Banks to build a system. It will take a wile but it will happen.

The Governor of the Bank of England, concurs:

‘UK had hoped to obtain full equivalence from Brussels for clearing and also other financial activities and is in talks with Brussels to produce a post-Brexit memorandum of understanding on financial services.

But Mr Bailey said that the recent attitude of the EU suggested that equivalence was a “sideshow” and that the EU’s real agenda seemed to be a “location policy”, of shepherding as much lucrative financial services activity out of London and into the bloc as possible’. @Independent

Of course they will - its a gift to the big EU financial centres.

I said this going back years on the various threads. The majority of jobs are in the UK but the majority of transaction volumes and values are in Euro's. So the indvidual states will be pushing to get these jobs relocated and pushing the EU to mandate activity is located geographically. It will be a long slow burn of jobs moving to the EU.

And why wouldn’t they?
We’re not a member, we’re a competitor that currently offers a service that they can’t do for themselves but it’s only a matter of time and investment before they can. We can of course look to the rest of the world to fill the gap but we could do that anyway before we left, and back then we were a gateway to the EU which we no longer are.

One gets the impression the EU are keen to make sure we remain that way.

The other take away was the BoE Governor muttering about the ‘dubious legality’ of blocking the City from Euro trade, a comment so rich in stupidity it makes you worry. The EU makes rules that benefit member states at the expense of non member states, its like literally the point of the EU.

The Au Pair industry just got told to fuck off. British Bedroom Farce is dealt a mortal blow :)

Main take on this is that as with ERASMUS it’s a move that is designed to restrict interaction with Europeans at student level.

Its seems their every act is designed to piss off what you would consider a "natural Tory voter"

As previously stated - post Brexit Vauxhall on the fringes of the EU within GM didn't look good. Sale of Vauxhall/Opel to PSA as they were then known made things even dicier. That was before the added problems caused by the pandemic then the rush to EV's - can Toyota import batteries for Derby under Brexit rules? Same for the MINI E made at Cowley but also other sites world wide.

Under the terms of the Brexit trade deal, it is possible for batteries made in the European Union (EU) to be installed in UK-assembled vehicles for export back to the EU (where most are sold). But industry experts say the economics don't make sense as the batteries are heavy and hard to transport as they are not currently permitted through the Channel Tunnel for safety reasons.

Lots of infighting between member states and German newspapers congratulating the UK on our vaccination progress.

i for one am glad we left that organisation.

Yes so glad to lose our biggest trading partners that we have only ever benefited from just because they have a slightly slower vaccine roll out than us in some European countries.
