Political relations between UK-EU

Truss appoints Ian Botham as UK Trade Envoy to Australia as the Whitehall farce gathers pace.................!!!!!

Another tax dodger who lives in the Channel Islands (Alderney I believe) no doubt being paid a fortune with no job description and no outcome if he delivers nothing or cocks up.

His only qualification is being a Tory supporter and a brexiteer.

Just Tories being Tories.

(oh and my local Shell station had 4 pumps out of 6 shut down today)

I can see the theory - Aussies like cricket, we'll give their business heads the opportunity to talk to our most famous cricketer in exchange for stuff. I doubt that he will actually have any real input apart from meet and greets as a famous face.

It does rather require that the Aussies do view him as some kind of god to prostrate themselves before - that seems a bit less likely.

Some of the other posts announced seem rather less attractive than Australia!

He’s not going to do it for less than first class air tickets and 5 star hotels so he’ll have to generate a fair amount of business just to cover his expenses.

Botham is a low-intelligence moron. Everyone knows it too.

Back to my theory which I've spouted on here for five years. Every single high profile Brexiteer is a moron. I still haven't seen an exception. They are all either nasty or stupid and in many cases both. That's why our government is such a shambles.

The UK kite mark punted back a year. Via FT.

’...there weren't enough certification bodies in UK, or enough readiness by EU businesses to certify their products with UKCA marks. So UK govt had to yield to reality.‘

Also UK border controls in October, will just be data collection. No checks etc. Means our exporters face full border controls, whereas EU exporters to UK will not.

Finally it seems we are prepared to *checks notes* starve rather than have EU drivers in the country. Marvellous :)

Something else that wasn't going to happen.......we are not going to starve because convicted drunk drivers will be out on day release to ( hopefully ) supermarkets laden with goods.....some of which will be alcohol. Can turkeys be trained to process other turkeys and deliver them in time for Xmas?

Talk about playing to the audience. £670bn is the total value of all imports and exports to EU in 2019 - last time I looked we still trade with the EU.

2021 will obviously show lower total value for various reasons but our exports to the EU are pretty healthy, our June export to EU numbers have rarely been better; 2018 they were marginally higher and then not since 2006 (ignoring inflationary impacts). Our balance of trade gap has shrunk (aka our imports from EU are lower) but the trend is also showing growing imports from EU - difficult to predict where we will end 2021 as the numbers are largely volatile. Anyroads I’m sure there would have been a post or two in the thread already about our improve exports to the EU so I won’t dwell on it.

Obviously numbers aren’t the be all and end all, there are real people with real businesses that are still struggling.

I love the comment about Lynn ‘So dense light bends around him’.
