Political relations between UK-EU

I know the Swiss version is quite complicated with many agreements. I don’t fully understand it. What I do know is we will spend years working towards something like it. When we could have started with a deal much closer and instead decided to start further back than we needed to.We will spend years working back to what we could have had anyway. We’ve even given N,ireland a head start in the journey.
But the EU want to replace the myriad of deals with a single deal that means they can control the Swiss like a Mafia protection racket.

Well personally I’d prefer the much simpler Norway version. As I’ve said though just being the same as Northern Ireland would suit me as a starting point. You know just being treated the same as some other UK residents. One UK and all that.
As an aside bollocks like comparing the eu to the mafia doesn’t help getting you points your taken seriously.

So proposing to block the export of 2nd vaccine jabs to UK pensioners isn't a protection racket?
Take the Rose Tinted Glasses off.

Working with Astra Zenica and the UK to improve EU vaccine delivery from EU Astrazenica plants would have been the way forward but no. That's not the EU way.
The EU has fucked up big style and they are looking for a scapegoat. Astrazenica and the UK were convenient targets.

So you only decided that after last weeks stromash did you ? Yes they were stupid threats made in a blind panic. It was never likely to happen still it's giving you something to cling to. Carry on, I'll carry on talking about the UK -Eu future relationship, what I think it should be and what I think we will progress to, Added to whether we should have started from where we;ve started.
Even Boris realises we need to have a considered debate not a rhetoric driven one going forward, over the vaccine distraction.

How is it like a protection racket?

If it was like a protection racket the AZ plants in the UK would be being torched if we didn't pay up. Now I know one of the plants had the bomb squad round but I don't think the EU was behind that.

It was more like, say, threatening to block exports. Stupid, but not a protection racket.

The other wrong idea is that the EU is responsible for "vaccine nationalism" when it's exactly what the EU was trying to avoid when it delayed its orders. It's possible to celebrate Britain's going it alone and getting in first at the expense of other countries - but that is vaccine nationalism.

The EU has fared badly in all this, but it's a bad odd to accuse them of not doing the very thing Britain has done. If they had, we wouldn't have such a success story.

Just seen you add that that last line on.

First off it was a joke to begin with, 2nd of all I really don’t know what point you are making with “scorched Earth”.

Thirdly, you must have been pissed to get so angry at a wee joke in relation to what Ric said.
I would have assumed that after 60,000+ posts I had suitably demonstrated that I’m not the angry type - and if I was to step outside character and get angry, I can say with supreme confidence that @Ric would be just about the last person to be on the other end of it.

That is the fundamental nature of the EU though. It is not a trade block it is a proto superstate and protectionist racket. von der Leyen has exposed this nature to the world
And this protection racket is also absolutely shit at protecting anyone.
At least when your pub got protection from the Krays, nobody dared come in
trying to swipe the stock.

You’ve misunderstood me again haha.

I didn’t mean you were angry at Ric, it was me!

You came back and added “piss poor comment” when I was joking about the entire thing.

No we won't, I think some folk cannot grasp that those ideas and days are gone. We have no need to be paying into anything now to be able to trade,
be that full EU membership or EFTA. Why on earth, would we be 'Working back'
to anything, and spending years doing so? We're out.

Think that’s pretty much it. They haven’t blamed the Uk as such though have they, just AZ (and then tried to impact us as a consequence?)

The only thing they can really have a go at AZ for is potentially the lateness of telling them the issue. We don’t know the conversations they were having behind closed doors though so again that might be a stretch.
