The BBC obviously does a lot of good stuff, but imo in general it's no better than the stuff produced by other companies.

In a nutshell, the BBC is nothing special. It's old fashioned entertainment and very rarely 'groundbreaking'.

Many older people have a far too nostalgic view of 'Aunty Beeb' and that's what the corporation relies on.

The BBC won't / doesn't have any significant appeal to modern and future generations. It will probably be self-funding within 10 years.

It depends how substantial. The athletics coverage is brilliant, I must say. Of course, I wish there was more football on main stream telly instead of it being on subscription. On the whole I think the BBC is pretty good, although it doesn’t stop me from having a bit of a moan at the telly when there’s nothing on that I will watch.

Ok, cheers for reply - I’ll hang on to your word “obviously” as some proof of positivity from you ;-)

On another note, I’m note sure your idea about older people is right though. I get the impression plenty of those critical of the bbc on this forum aren’t necessarily spring chickens.

The BBC licence fee helped fund Channel 4.

It’s nowhere near the level of any of them would have been picked up. There are shedloads the bbc have produced over the years that commercial companies wouldn’t have made as they had to worry more about the bottom line.

If the BBC were purely making programmes that are trying to appeal to everyone then they’re failing in what should be their mission.

I'm certainly no spring chicken, and I did say 'many'...!

Good BBC programmes are few and far between imo... MOTD was an excellent programme until it became a discussion amongst pundits. It's gone downhill since Lineker and his mates got involved.
Blue Peter and similar BBC educational / kids programmes led the way and continue to do so. All my kids grew up with BBC shows and only the odd Channel 5 show would distract them.
To be honest, other than the odd quiz, Bargain Hunt, and Homes under the Hammer, I haven't watched BBC daytime TV in years, and I haven't been tempted to watch much BBC in the evening for at least 20 years.
BBC radio is excellent. Something for everyone, and the only part of the business that (imo) has continually delivered quality product.
I stopped watching / listening to the news on any station a long time ago. As I got older (and became much more of a realist) I found that anything beyond the headlines was invariably editorial (usually biased) opinion. Newspapers are no different.. I have no real time for them other than football gossip.

While I listen to BBC radio shows above any other stations, having so much choice on TV nowadays I have found that very, very few BBC shows attract my interest.
 
This reminds you that it wasn't hit after hit on the BBC in the good old days.
