As someone who is admittedly unfamiliar with the inner workings of politics; what happens if a coalition can't be formed?

The Conservatives, as the largest party, put forward a "Queen's speech" policies they want to implement. This is voted on by MP's
If it's defeated then Labour have the opportunity of doing the same. If that's defeated then there's another GE in a month

Dont see point of re-election. Who'd change their vote? Just be a lower turnout.

Parties to vote on a manifesto for govt best idea.

I'm hoping not.

Luckily I think I'll get my wish.

Can't see any other outcome. Tories + DUP alliance = enough seats to go to the Queen. I've heard this morning even Labour MP's saying the Tories as the largest party are entitled to first dibs. And it's easy for them to get over the line. Whether Labour can cobble anything together (or not) is irrelevant.

This is probably going to sound silly; but what would happen if the same result was just reached? Do they keep voting until someone wins a majority?

depends on how co-operative the parties want to be.

But as the two big parties are so far apart, we would probably look like Italy for a bit with general elections 2 or 3 times a year and a really bad exit from the EU

If we think she has a problem getting 3 or 4 more MPs to support the conservatives its nothing compared with the problem Corbyn would have trying to unify MPs from 5 disparate parties to muster over 50 MPs from them. Ain't going to happen.

no i think you miss my point, i think the tories and DUP are ready to form coalition, but the fact that DUP have already stated they see it hard for May to continue is a bad sign for her! i was talking about May's job, not whether the two parties would go ahead together

It looks like IndyRef2 is a dead duck for the forseeable. What does this mean for Sturgeon? who will lead the SNP at Westmister?

Indy 2 is dead in the water. You have to put this into
I understand @Magicpole's off-forum name is Jockie "Up yer Kilt" McFinnan-Haddock. Could he be a surprise contender?

That's me. And yes they should ask me. I think they realise that too.

Ian Paisley supported paramilitaries. Those types threw grenades at funerals.

Let's not get into that though.

Ian Paisley is dead, and you brought it up.

This is in no way comparable to Corbyn calling Hamas and Hezbollah his "friends" or Shawcraft suggesting we should have cups of tea with ISIS rather than bomb them.

Hopefully DUP talks with Tories fall through, go horrendously leaving the way open for a Labour govt

Fair point. Had they not done that, he would doubtless have done better. Had the Tories not ran the worst campaign ever, they would doubtless have done better too.

Everyone seems to be going on about how well Corbyn did, and its true there are aspects of his campaigning style that work well. But if I was a Labour voter, I'd be sitting here thinking of what might have been, had Labour been led by someone like Chukka Ummuna, or Sadiq Khan, or Andy Burnham and didn't have some of the ludicrous hard left poiicies. I think you'd have a majority now.
Totally agree.

Except that the election would never have been called in the first place had any of those people been Labour leader!
It was simply a power grab by Mavis based on her gamble that she could easily beat Jezz.

Woke up with a great feeling this morning. I admit that I voted partly out of spite; I wanted to see the look on May's sour, arrogant face (hers has been one of the most egocentric and insincere campaigns I've ever seen) when she realised she had cocked-up massively, and I've not been disappointed.

Corbyn ran a fantastic campaign; to hold is head so high and stand so firm despite the pathetic and and frightening vitriol directed at him from Murdoch and Dacre shows that he is a much stronger leader than people give him credit for.

Why would she go? OK, she lost some seats but she has given the SNP a bloody nose.
No, that was all Ruth Davidson's doing. She is reasonable and amiable, and has show a level of personality and courage in her campaign that Theresa May could never come close to matching.

Totally agree with this; I think he is by far Labour most competent politician.

Because most people aren't stupid. Old people might be able to be scared by newspaper headlines as that is their only source of news but everyone else has access to the internet and you keep telling people someone is evil they will look into it and make their own conclusions.

Why do you think I've been so vociferous on here regarding our online freedoms? Access to information is one of the cornerstones of democracy. The better informed we are the better decisions we can make. Not something I fancy letting a Government with an agenda control no matter how much they stomp their feet and scream 'but terrorism!!!'. Hopefully this result is another nail in that very dodgy coffin.

Apparently they want a hard brexit someone on tv said

DUP are in favor of a soft Brexit, though like the majority of Northern Ireland were in the Remain camp originally.

A hard Brexit is particularly difficult for Northern Ireland, given it shares the land border with the Republic of Ireland, so it's a sensitive issue.
