Well it's eye watering but this myth peddlalled that the rich don't pay is utter bullshit. The top 5 percent of earners pay half of the total tax intake.

Is that actually true? The way my Labour voting comrades at work were carrying on it was only between 10-15% towards the total tax so they 'contribute' more.

@Labour are calling this a victory but in the run up to critical talks regarding the exit deal I think it will cause major issues...... I consider what Labour have done therefore to be divisive and though I get why I think that even the leadership have had blinkers on.... it can't be a victory, even a moral one for Labour if the country are ultimately worse off as a result can it?

That would depend entirely on all of them paying the full amounts due i would have said but it doesn't negate the point i made.

I have no issue with anyone earning whatever amount they can. All power to their elbow i say just as long as they do pay what they are due to pay.

My biggest gripe is do multi national companies making £Billions pay enough and do we need to look at our corporation tax rates again or possibly look at a turnover tax instead which for me would be much fairer.

Just one of his companies paid out a dividend of £181m in 2016. That's a private company so the majority went to him personally and therefore that £58m is about 30% of what he earned.

Nobody would have an issue with that, indeed many are annoyed that companies are trying to avoid paying the amount of tax that they owe.

The debate here is regarding those who feel that the rich who DO pay tax, pay the amount of tax that is expected yet there are some who believe that they are still not being charged enough. I feel that sentiment is wrong. That's why i'm asking, what would people be satisfied with? 50% of tax? 65%, 85%? I mean 85% of tax from £100m still leaves them with £15m to spend, right? I mean who cares if they've got plans with their money to build complexes, businesses, investing in people and projects. All rich people do with their money is buy yachts, Ferrari's and mansions. What do they need all that extra money for?

Kind of, yeah. How many average tax payers do you think it would take to match Sugar's contribution?

If he swans off because he thinks he's being rinsed (along with several other very wealthy individuals) we'd have to have far higher tax rates for everyone else and a much lower threshold.
