What's the problem? You have first past the post, you occasionally get this; you have a proportional system and you get it all the time, and you get used to it. Merkel's party doesn't have a majority in Germany.
Well obviously its the sticking point but I was writing from the perspective that our political system demands a majority - which I agree with, a majority of seats should be in favour of the government otherwise it'd hard to enact a particular strategy if you can't pass the laws you want.

It's a bit of a fck up whatever way you look at it. We shouldn't be in this position to begin with but Brexit has been very decisive.

Tbf fair if may cannot get a queens speach together within a week then lizzie should offer jezza a chance to have a go.

We cannot wait forever while she (may) fannies about.

Theresa May is quoted as telling Tory MPs: "I got us into his mess, I'm the one who will get us out of it"
  • The Queen's Speech - where the Government sets out its agenda and was expected next Monday - could be delayed as DUP talks continue, a minister admits
  • Damian Green says discussions with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to shore up the minority administration at Westminster are "going well"
  • The PM has held a political cabinet meeting, that included Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson, after full Cabinet earlier was postponed
  • A number of politicians, including Ms Davidson, are calling for a softer line on Brexit, including a rethink on leaving the single market

Me thinks Ruth is lining herself up for First Minister of Scotland.

Just gets better and better with these tory fuckwits. Goat skin parchment, begging to norn iron, boris johnfuckinson, strong and stable, dropping stuff from their manifesto, watering down. Fiasco and no mistake.

If only mcfcwhatever was here to tell us how May is a great negotiator and doesn't give her hand away etc etc. In fact, any tory voter would be welcome to try and tell me how fucking peachy things are after a fucking stupid, bent, twisted referendum followed by a attempted power grab snap election.

Lied to about brexit, lied to about election manifesto? Jeez, you tories must be well pissed off today.

Germany 2013

Votes Seats
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) 16,233,642 191
Social Democratic Party (SPD) 12,843,458 58
The Left (DIE LINKE) 3,585,178 4

Merkel won the bloody election. More votes, more seats. Like the Tories. Get over it.

Good point. I think it's kind of the view that, to form a minority Government you need to have enough confidence of other parties to have a "majority confidence" in the house.

Short of having a second vote between just Labour and Tory (which might be a viable option), it is effectively that, since you can assume people who voted Lib Dem/SNP would support Labour over Tory.

That raises a point actually - there's no point having a second general election, but to be fair to all, they could keep the seats as is, but have the people vote between the two largest parties as to who forms a minority Government - Labour or Tory.

I think it'd be better to go the other way. Split both Labour and the Conservatives to have far more choice in political parties. I'm pretty centrist (liberal on social matters and economically conservative) and wanted Brexit and there was no party I wanted to vote for. The Tories were the least worst choice for me.

It would mean more coalitions but they'd work better if they were the norm rather than unusual, as happens in much of the continent. A two party system just allows the popular party of the time to push further and further from the centre guided by philosophy rather than realism.

That said, you do end up with something approximating a state of equilibrium. Most governments cannot go too far right or left because they become unelectable. The exception within living memory is of course Margaret Thatcher's conservatives in the 80s, where their electoral popularity was dependent principally on the outcome of the Falklands war.

This was entirely unnecessary and this is the last time I'm going to say this to you.

You have to admit mate, it's to say the very least, a bit one sided in here. And a jokey comment like that is pretty bloody innocuous when compared to a lot of the stuff. if you go banning people for jokey comments, you'd have to ban half the posters.

Mavis to the 1922 Committee " I got us into this mess and I'll get us out of it".
Us meaning the "Country"?
Nah.
The Conservative Party, as usual.
Two national votes called by the Tories in the last two years to sort out their internal difficulties have fcuked the country up.
If only Red Ed had got in back in 2015, we could all have been relaxing now looking forward to next season.

And if only Labour hadn't chosen the wrong brother in 2010...

I'm not sure that's true, mate. Certainly in 1987. Even in 1983, the economy was starting to go through the gears.
