I’m reading Irish history from the ice age to modern times and am just past the siege of Derry.
Something I found interesting is that the Whigs and Tory parties that were opposing around 1678 or so got their names from Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic.
Considering that the Tories were royalists that supported James II, it surprised me me that the Irish Old English (Normans) and Gaelic Lords firstly supported Charles I in the nine year war thinking he would restore Irish Catholic land ownership, before Cromwell stepped in.
Tóraidhe, in modern Irish tóraí, means "outlaw", "robber", from the Irish word tóir, meaning "pursuit", since outlaws were "pursued men".
The Tories were outlaws for supporting a Catholic, James II.
Fascinating stuff.
