POTY - Virgil Van Dijk

Sterling should have won this, VD is a very good player and has shored up the dippers defence but Sterling has been utterly outstanding this season and although VD was proclaimed the winner in the media many months ago, he's not even on the same lap as Sterling.....

The individual awards are interesting in how the recipients look at them. Does Van Dijk believe that he is the player of the year, especially when he voted for Sterling (!) or would he bin it (see what I did there?) for his team to carry off the main prize, and if they don't win it, is he left thinking "If only you fuckers on this team were as good as me, we would have strolled it!

Why would anyone choose a defender who is the lynch pin of a defence that has thrown away a 10 point lead in the Prem, over attacker who has been instrumental in clawing that deficit back and putting their team on the cusp of the title?

Well, let"s see who they play for.

Liverpool Trophy's this year perhaps:

Premier league runners up champions and moral victors
POTY VVD
Manager of the year Plopp
BBC sports personality team of the year

You could make strong arguments for any of van Dijk, Sterling or Bernardo Silva tbf. Not really bothered that he has won it though. He's had an exceptional season and if that's who his peers voted for (whenever the vote was held) then you can't really argue against it. There's presumably less bias in that vote than the FWA award.

I personally don’t have too many complaints about VVD winning the Player of the Year, he’s been a tower of strength for Liverpool and had they missed him for any length of time during the season I’m pretty certain they would be more than a single point behind. Testament to how we’ve coped without key players such as KDB, he’s so important not sure Liverpool would have coped as admirably.

He has brought calm, organisation, leadership, domination, etc, everything that Kompany brought to us when he developed into the finest defender in the league.

Just as I have no complaints with the awards, I don’t think anyone could have any complaints should Raheem have won it. Outstanding season, and has developed into a player I didn’t think was possible.

Virgil has had an amazing season and without him Liverpool would have been at the standard they was last year, I reckon he will be lifting the champions league in May.

Truly hope not the dipper frenzy will be unbearable.

Bernardo won't win it but, for me, there's no question he is the most deserving of the honor in a year where City, again, have had to endure key injuries for key stretches

I can handle them winning that to be honest if that team doesn't win something after potentially losing only once in the league and finishing on 97 points it would insane.

I'm trying to separate the team from their fans it helps abit haha.

How the hell has Pogba made this list!

Virgil will probably get it but for me Aguero or sterling deserves it. Aguero is constantly hitting the net year after year & this is probably his last chance. Sterling equally as deserving as Virgil on how important he has been.

Watch Pogba win it! Lol

Unfortunately I work in Miseryside.

Reckon Raheem is in with a good shout of the BBC SPOTY. City team of the year if we get the treble.

I don't like how this award is announced before the end of the season. If Liverpool win the league, fair enough, if City win it, surely we have someone more deserving?

In all fairness though, VVD has been unreal. Is it the best season by a CB in Premier League history? He's basically dragged Liverpool to a 90+ point season. Without him, they'd probably finish with high 70/low 80 points. I don't think the same can be said about any individual City player?
