Pre Match Thread: League Cup Final v Liverpool

I don't actually remember Costel Pantilimon letting in any downright clownish goals — correct me if I'm wrong on that. Caballero did it as recently as last weekend. So the comparison is false. Poor call by Pellegrini. Sometimes giving your word to one individual has to take a back seat to the interests of the whole clubthe team, the backroom staff, the owners, and us the fans. Ah well, let's see. I'll be totally behind the whole team, and that includes Caballero. But if Willy drops a complete clanger, the hatred for Pellegrini running through the entire blue end of the stadium will be palpable. And that would be a pity, because the man did guide us to the title and this trophy in his first year in.

From my point of view the thing that makes me angry is that MP has clearly taken a cup that most smaller clubs spend their lives wishing they could play for let alone win, for granted by not fielding his top keeper. I will spend the rest of my life wishing I could go to Wembley to see us play there again for it. To have March 2 2014 all over again. But I don't think we will. Not in my lifetime. That is why it was so important for me to go. The only chance of a Wembley appearance that does not involve playing a top team we have no chance of winning is the Championship Play-Off Final - which is why I would love us to go down so we have the chance to go to the Play-Off final.

Does the League Cup mean anything to Manuel? Having already won it and given what he has done elsewhere in the league for you, my guess is it means as much to him as an old tissue. That is why I think, as harsh as it is, the League Cup should not be open to the top teams. Especially given all the other ways a top team can enter Europe excluding the League Cup with half the effort. I think it should only be open to teams as high as say Tottenham or Everton.
If the league cup means nothing to Pellegrini, why has he gone full strength in every game?

The caballero decision will have been made at the beginning of the season to keep him motivated as number 2. I'd rather have joe but I totally understand if Pellegrini has promised him that cup , which he obviously has done. As a manager if you aren't seen as fair, or a man of your word, then you lose the dressing room. Part of his style is instilling confidence in his players by showing belief in them. That's what he's doing here.

It's bold and it's a risk. I hope it doesn't backfire.

I hear what you are saying Dave but Joe is our PL keeper yet was rightly dropped for 7 PL games during the 2013/14 season. Last Sunday wasn't a one off. Willy has been consistently poor from his first game at Wembley in the CS 2 years ago until present. Joe, rightly, didn't play in the 2014 CoC final but should do this time if Pellegrini is truly being fair.
