'Giving youth a chance' has to play a distinct second fiddle to getting through tonight. I'd be quite happy with a very strong side, perhaps including the likes of Nasri, Navas and Bony who aren't going to get into our strongest team.
With the injuries we are carrying there are fewer of these fringe players to keep happy at the moment, so it's all a bit up the air.
What we can't do of course is pick a load of kids and get knocked out.
Might as well just get rid of the entire academy. If we're never going to give the better lads of the academy a go in our first team to find out if they are good enough to cut it at the top level and to give them valuable experience then what's the entire point? Away to a poor Sunderland side in the early rounds of the carling cup is the ideal situation for a couple of them to get involved.
After 2 defeats on the trot it also allows some of the players to recover and get their thoughts together before a much much bigger game on Saturday at Spurs.
Maffeo, Roberts and Kelechi to be involved from the start would be ideal, and if we're doing well then we could bring on Garcia from the bench.
