Sooner or later there has to be some decent, well informed players retiring who can take over as co-commentators from Sutton, Savage and Macmanaman, Carragher etc and add something to the viewing spectacle rather than trotting out clichés and blatantly stating the bleedin' obvious.

When I see him in action and hear people say he is one the top English referees I am reminded that at the last World Cup not a single English official was considered good enough.

If we had competent match officials we wouldn’t need VAR.
