Premium bonds

I have a 10 shilling premium bond given to me as a Christmas present by my grandmother some time in the mid 60's.

It's not won a penny, and I have no idea how I could be contacted if it had.

The winning numbers were printed in the papers every month, with £25,000 being the top prize in those far off days, and you had to phone them up if you thought you had won.

we've recently found a number of bonds my grandad paid for between the early 90s to around 2008 before his death.

Found in some old furniture he had, which my dad has had since, we just never found them hidden until these last few weeks.

about 20 to 30 different value bonds, equalling around 70/80k!!!

I hope for my dads sake he can cash in on them still

You can register on the nsandi.com website with the premium bond number/account, and then they’ll know where you now live to send that million pound…

Just done my sums for the last year. I have 46,000. Won diddly this month and had nothing last October and November. That's 3 blanks since last September. Full winnings 1750 for the 12months which works out at about 3.8%. About the same as an easy access ISA. But down on a newly opened ISA on somewhere like Trading 212, nearly 4.9 with new 12 month account bonus.

Savvy people use premium bonds as a last repository when all tax free returns have been exhausted.

Not premium bonds then?
You can’t have more than £50K in them.

Could be tricky as bonds have been paperless for circa 20 years. You might have to go direct to the agent bank that acts as the administrator.

I had no idea that's what you had to do. I can't say I've spent much time worrying about a 10/0 premium bond.

Be interesting to see how you get on. I have worked in a large investment bank that used to deal with paper. They had shut down all the processing of paper but would get the odd random thing turn up in the post. It's been a few more years since that as well.

Had some for a couple of years, 10 grand invested when I had spare cash.
So far this year have £675 "prizes" biggest one is a £500.
Last year £375 with a couple of £100.
Total returns just over £1,000 for 2 years.
Shows how a relatively big prize makes a difference.

Once you establish that you (your dad) are the owner and you sort out how you can access the capital you then need to ask where ghe premiums have been going? Could be a big number.

You must hold them for a month of course before they qualify to win. So if you bought some today they'd be in October's draw.
