President Joe Biden

Democrats lack nationwide propaganda outlets that broadcast campaign messages under the guise of "news."; yes, mainstream news in American is biased towards Democrats - but it's still news. Meaning that factual reporting comes first. Moreover, mainstream news outlets in the states will criticize the sitting President - even if that President is a Democrat whose policies align with their personal beliefs.

Whereas Republicans enjoy extremely partisan coverage from numerous so-called "news" organizations - Fox, Breitbart, and so forth. Facts don't matter in this coverage. And such outlets will never criticize Trump - with but rare exceptions (for whatever reason Fox still broadcasts an actual news program - with balanced coverage - now anchored by Chris Wallace).

Most voters are already locked in - they're going to vote either Democrat or Republican no matter what. But some few are open to voting for either party depending on perceived performance.

How then does such a swing voter decide?

Probably they watch various broadcasts - ABC/NBC/CBS/PBS as well as Fox.

What do they view? Uniform criticism of Biden across all outlets - whereas Fox presents a (counterfactual but perhaps hard to discern) constant anti-Democrat, pro-Trump message.

In such an environment it's far too difficult for most viewers to discern truth from lies; and those tending towards a particular viewpoint, easily find an echo chamber of reinforcing opinion, polarizing their viewpoint.

And this to me is perhaps the biggest problem facing American right now - bigger even than COVID or climate change. That is, truth, science and expert advice no longer matter. In the USA, we base our decisions on opinion, facts notwithstanding.

And then they discover that their voting districts have been gerrymandered into irrelevance?

I suppose that the above is an easily foreseeable outcome of unfettered exchange of ideas. In such an environment it's far too difficult for most viewers to discern truth from lies; and those tending towards a particular viewpoint, easily find an echo chamber of reinforcing opinion, polarizing their viewpoint.

Good post BMATP balanced IMO.

Especially the part about the truth and fact and while its an aside we see with perception on celebrities like Cliff Richard the power of the media ( I wonder how many thought and still do think he was guilty of the happening he was never charged for , for example ) purely by the way it was reported in the media.

We had the highest ranking Catholic Priest jailed for over a year for a crime he never committed but evidence and truth were not important for a long time.

We had a politician who whether you stand on the left or the right or anywhere had his career virtually ruined in politics at least because a woman who just before she killed herself said he had raped her some 30 years prior when all the evidence said he couldn't have.

in all cases people central to the process have not been made accountable for their decision making so whoops its ok we got it wrong lets move on to the next one who could be another Jimmy Saville or Rolf Harris.

its more opaque when you discuss things like climate change for while the science is compelling its impacts and what the response however its managed will do in the short , medium and long term is open to debate and difficult to determine.

I do think you have a point though that your main point is true in many democratic countries now in varying degrees depending on the subject matter and often when you seek the truth you are often shouted down.

"Folks...Here's the deal. I've been in Washington for 50 years and always wanted to be President. Thanks to my party giving me a lift up, and poor candidate, my wish finally came true. I promised you a decent minimum working wage, a record breaking infrastructure bill with the persona of an inoffensive grandpa strategy to do it. So what have I done really since I swore an oath to the country?

Let me tell you...I've spent much of that time letting my friend Mitch dictate the minority set's the agenda. You see I portray myself as a progressive, when really I'm not. I want things to stay the same. Well for me and buddy Mitch. It's all about the power malarky folks. Not serving you. If it was about serving you I'd have got the former president in jail by now and given all you people who gave me your vote what I said I'd deliver. I'm sorry, that's not the way American politics works. It's all about me, Nancy and Mitch keeping our corporate friends happy over the ones that voted us in. Just think about that for one second. You don't matter. Some people say we're heading for a civil war. I can assure you that will never happen. Because that's bad for me and the other guy that came before me. It might cull a few progressives along the way which is a bonus. Thank you. God Bless the United States of America."

Signed,

Joe "Things-will-fundamentally-stay-the-same" Biden.

You know what's funny?

That gerrymandering only seems to be an issue when a crucial vote is around the corner! Who knew??

How many times have the Dems have chances to do something around the gerrymandering issue and just haven't?

Gee, who knew...
Yes, gerrymandering is an issue regardless of who is in the seat. Both parties abuse it. County/voting boundaries need regulating somehow

Dropping paid annual leave from his bill to placate Republicans.

He's a ****.

I don’t think he’s a **** nor is he doing it to “placate Republicans” (blame Manchin) but paid parental leave is among the last things in this bill I’d sacrifice if forced to make a trade-off — I’d gut the affordable housing aspect because so much of what makes homes expensive is local not Federal regulation, and supply is coming in waves over the next two years. I am really disappointed.
