It's happened before...Fuck me that’s a frightening concept.
I hope you’re wrong.

A major thing is that the Trump base loves Jr., and he's even more extreme than his dad and big into Q.
If Trumpists and Republicans split, both will be unelectable. McConnell, Graham et al. would rather hold some power in a Trump/Qanon government than be in the minority as a sane Republican party.
I certainly agree with you that his "people" are not going away. My concern is that a smarter figurehead will emerge, probably with Trump's blessing, and they will retake power. Imagine if some real calculating despot with a sharp brain and the gift of the gab takes control of these people and starts grandstanding on the world stage?
It isn't appeasment. It might be a solution that doesn't result in any more people being killed, nutters or law enforcement. But who knows what will work in the wobbly world of US politics.Appeasement didn't work in 1938 and it would send all the wrong messages now.
Agree mate but I’m talking longer term. These are approximately 70 million of these people and they are breeding prolifically with each other.I dont see anyone leading this mob like Trump has. Jnr does not have the stage presence. He looks like a coke head when he speaks and the wider Republican voter base would not back him - i doubt he would win through the primaries. Ivanka has more chance - but she is the most liberal of them - she is practically a democrat politically. She could adopt a more Trumpy retoric and do well but to be honest as long as Don is alive he will not accept anyone taking any role that is not subservient to himself. When he is dead then Ivanka might have a chance.
As for McConnell and Graham etc. They have to ask what is best - to continue to be slaves to the Trump agenda or take the opportunity to break. Its a now or never. There is a behind the scenes battle for control of the GOP - control of the money and the machinery. They want that control and they want Trump gone but they might not be able to have both. The GOP lawmakers would split and it would spill in to the open but the alternative is that the Trumpers in the party continue to build even after his presidency is over and there power would decline. The GOP could get worse instead of drawing a line and moving back towards a credible party.
Letting a criminal get away with his crimes because you're worried about what others will do is appeasement plain and simple. It isn't appeasment. Good analysis I think. Let's hope they make the right decision and impeach. It seems clear cut legally - if Senate vote then he is done.
I believe the magic number is 17. That many GOP senators out of 50 to vote to 'remove'. I suspect the answer lies with Mitch and team and their strategists. It will as ever be a calculation in relation to their interest and not what is right or what the facts of the issue are. It will come down to Pros and Cons:-
Pro's
Trump out clears the road for other candidates (trump in the primary process was awful)
Draws a line so they can move on
Will help with many big Corp donors
Will help with any disaster PR that is likely to come out over the next 12 months (i.e. there will be revelations)
Con's
Pisses off the base
Splits the party as some will not follow the line and will look to stay aligned to the trump base
Splits conservative media
Trump will go scorched earth and actively work against the party (he has zero party affinity)
I have no idea where they will land on it. I think they are wrestling with all of the above.

This is most certainly a crossroads for the GOP, and probably the best and only opportunity they have left to cut ties with anyone named Trump. The brand is toxic, and if the GOP want rid, now is the time. Otherwise, I can't see them surviving through to the next election cycle.I dont see anyone leading this mob like Trump has. If anyone on here can't see how f*cked up this is then I suggest you take time out and consider your life choices.
"...briefed on Monday"???It was already past that point when new schools were being built with zig-zag corridors and ‘safe-rooms’

Seriously, how bad does it have to get? We've already seen Trump's lap dog Lindsey Graham get hounded at Reagan Airport by MAGA nutters because he wasn't vocal enough in his support for the Dear Leader, and they've already threatened to lynch the VP and killed a policeman at the Capitol Building coup attempt. Is that what the GOP want to be associated with forever more?
The problem you have is that the GOP just voted unanimously in favour of Trump Cheerleader Ronna McDaniel (niece of Mitt Romney; they don't get on) to continue as Chair of the RNC, which tells a story in and of itself. Trump is a cancer that appears to have effected every cell of the GOP, and getting rid of him is going to be a long and painful process. They need to start now.
Losing big business support may just be enough encourage them to start thinking about their next step very carefully.
A culture of fear within the Republican party is what saw her re-elected unopposed. That is no way to govern when you consider the actual function of a political party (in office and opposition) is essentially to serve the people. The Ronna thing is a big part of what is going on. As long as Trump and the GOP are one and the same then people like her will be able to rise up in the party. If the likes of Graham and Romney and others want to move back toward the old values conservative GOP they have to make a stand. If they Impeach Trump and it works Trump will go full on scorched earth on the GOP and his base will follow. As many of them say openly - its not the Republiocan party its the Trump Party. If you break Trump way from the GOP then he has no party and his base are politically homeless. That leaves Ronna high and dry, its over for her. She might even resign and leave the party.
Agree - and i would also point out she will be terrible at the job. Hence me saying they (as in the party) could get worse from this point - unless they make a break. But there are no clear signs that they are willing to make that break. Trump gifted them the oportunity and clear rationale to burry him, and they are letting it slip.A culture of fear within the Republican party is what saw her re-elected unopposed. Was that this Monday or last though?"...briefed on Monday"???
Capitol police KNEW this was going down.
Fair point. It's not clear. Was that this Monday or last though?
Buckle up Jared.
