Proper Kebabs

We were remembering, during a few pints the other night, the days of the takeaway near the Odeon cinema on Oxford Road.....Turkish (?) run place on the corner next to the entrance to Tiffany's.

Their kebabs were the real deal. None of this naan bread malarky and two kilo of various meats and 'sauce'.
Just a regular pitta bread, donner or shish, salad and lemon juice...proper kebabs they were....Lavverly.

There was a Turkish kebab shop on Dickinson Road, Longsight, that made amazing Kebabs - the place didn't stay open very long and i have no idea why as they were the best kebabs i've eaten.

The naan breads were that big you could have made a hole in middle and worn it as a poncho.

I remember years back, the appetizer in Northenden did decent kebabs. Grilled, spiced chicken or donner in pitta with shredded cabbage and salad with salt and lemon. Simple but tasty after a night on the piss.

Well you said donor meat as well which isn't real kebab. I would say Naan being a flat bread is like a pitta as well. I haven't been to many kebab shops that use charcoal. I can think of one and I also think some weird mint sauce is supposed to be used to (obviously thats a choice though)

Kebabs here are okish. Pork, Chicken or Sheftalia or mix. In a Paphitiki (paphos) pitta (best on the Island apparently) with diced cucumber, tomato, onion, parsley, salt and lemon. If you eat them in, you usually get pickles and olives thrown in, all for a fiver.

The owner was Mr Michaels ( Greek ), lived near me in Old Trafford. I went to school with his son Mike, yep thats right Michael Michaels. Strangely enough I walked into a kebab house in Eccles recently to find it was owned by my old mate Mike. Its just off the big roundabout in Monton, does a mean kebab,

This lad has great taste ;-), I've always known them as 'Gyros' though, the bread is very naan like though rather than that shitty pitta stuff over here.

First time we went to Greece (other side of the Peloponese mountains), me and the Mrs used to pass this little family run restaurant with a little take-away hatch at the side just outside of the main town (which was tiny really), the owner and his family always seemed lovely and pleasant, so one night, rather than eating a sit down meal I decided we'd give the take-away bit a go.

I ordered three of the above, two for me, one for Mrs DH, while she went to the phone, she was only on five minutes but came back to me having eaten all three and covered in tzatziki, had to go home and get changed lol, on the way home I got another three :-), never tasted anything so simple, and yet so delicious, before or since.

Is there anywhere in Manchester that does decent Souvlaki/Gyros at all? I've been looking for ages and the best I could find is the place in the Arndale market which is ok but not as good as in Greece. Like you said the bread is special but everywhere over here seems to use shitty pittas!!!

Used to be good on a Sunday for a late drink when the pubs shut at 1030 too.

I can do the souvlaki chicken or pork and tzatziki is a piece off piss to make but I struggled with the bread. Paphos pm'ed a recipe for the bread (me friends with a chef from the med) but unfortunately my baking skills are non existence. Then a spotted some Warburton greek pitta style bread and bob's your uncle I've got my Souvlaki gyros/pittas and I'm as happy as a pig in shit. Love 'em probs about 75% as good.
