Prostate cancer

I`ve got an MRI scan next Monday, having already given a second blood test taken within the last 4 weeks, after the Consultant thought it best, as my reading had gone up from 6.7 to 8.1, which I didn`t think had risen too much due to my age.
However as she said, better safe than sorry and if the MRI scan shows anything then she wants to take a biopsy.
So legs up in the stirrup and the "cutter" up the anus. However I`m due to have a new hip fitted on 9th December and theres no way at the moment that I could raise my legs into the stirrup.
Just hopeful that alls well with the MRI scan and second blood test.

had the catheter removed thankfully.wasnt as bad as i was expecting tbh.feel much better not having it on now but thanks to manc baggie for his catheter advise.i feel genrally ok now a bit sore in parts of my abdomen but not too bad.the worst bit for me was constipation for about 3 days which made it very uncomfortable to sit down for any length of time.after id had some laxatives i can confirm my wife said my shit stinks.just the continence and ed to sort out now hopefully so onwards and upwards and thanks to every one who took time to message and the advice given to me it was much appreciated.

Yes, I understand the issues for the NHS and said that in my post. In my case, the PSA was a 100% indicator of Prostate Cancer.

Interesting about your mate. With no symptoms and a low PSA, why did he have further scans and a biopsy? There must have been something that made the doctors want to go that far. Was it a physical exam? No harm in having both if that’s what it takes but yes, it will be a big cost to the NHS.

But then they regularly screen for bowel cancer (from 54) and breast cancer (50?). Why should prostate cancer be any different? Let’s face it, there is currently no screening programme for this - it’s totally reliant on people asking the doctor, which is what happened in my case.
Breast screening stops at 63 now but if you present with a lump or other signs they send you to the breast clinic for a mammogram , seems a bit early to stop routine screening , likewise smear tests stop at 60 now unless suspicious symptoms

I am surprised there is no routine screening for you guys

You’re welcome mate. Hope your recovery goes well.

I didn’t realise that. It does seem early. I guess all of these things are worked out on the balance of probability but as we know, people get cancer at all ages.

Re the “no routine screening”, I agree. The experts say there’s no easy test but it’s got to be to do with money.

What really worries me Rob is it the cost of screening they are avoiding or the consequential costs of higher detection
