Protesters

Pretty solid explanation of the protest and I would say it’s been pretty successful based on the amount of news coverage it got.

I much prefer these shock protests than the glue yourselves to the road to fuck up everyones day sort. Obviously all protest has to effect people but I feel you’ve got to walk a line between getting attention and just pissing people off.

Isn’t literally the opposite of what she’s said true?

Green projects subsidised heavily and fossil fuels not?

They’ve only allowed more fossil fuel projects due to the energy crisis and that renewables are miles away from providing the short term gap we have.

No, she's right.

Coal, oil and gas get more than $370bn (£305bn) a year in support, compared with $100bn for renewables, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) report found. Just 10-30% of the fossil fuel subsidies would pay for a global transition to clean energy, the IISD said.
Currently, the UK’s tax regime makes it the most profitable country in the world to develop big offshore oil and gas projects. Most spending on oil and gas exploration can be offset against tax, as it is classified as ‘research and development’. Almost all spending on new fields can be offset in the first year of development, and companies can claim tax relief for decommissioning offshore installations.

Since the Paris Agreement, the government has provided £13.6 billion in subsidies to the UK oil and gas industry. From 2016 to 2020 companies received £9.9 billion in tax relief for new exploration and production, including £15 million of direct grants for exploration, and £3.7 billion in payments towards decommissioning costs.

This FT article sggests the govt. subsidises Green power by £230m/year

Which countries does that cover?

She's not barking at the moon even though she looks like the Pears soap has been unopened in her house since it was bought.

She didn't inconvenience anyone or put someones life in danger and she is making a point, I don't fully understand what that point is but that's the point, you have got to get the point over to those who don't know or those who wilfully don't care.

I'm sort of with her but again she's be taken more seriously if she looked serious that's just the way you get people to take notice of you.

G20, but I put in the UK figures above.

Looks like £2.2Bn a year for Oil and Gas and £230m for green.
Fair enough, that’s surprising but then it goes back to whether investment in green, as in if we switched it, would that be sufficient to power the country?

My personal take is we need to move to green, absolutely, and doing so as quickly as we can but without destroying lives and the economy and having people freeze to death.

I’m not sure renewables are there yet.

Wind now generates 71.2 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity a year, which is 23% of the UK’s annual needs. Total UK electricity generation from all sources in 2021 was 308.7TWh according to DUKES published by BEIS.

Labour is pledging to quadruple it by 2030...so I guess tha means we could be at 90% wind if they fulfill that pledge?

It’s important to keep asking questions, they are a renewables think tank and whilst I wish they were correct and it was that easy, I don’t entirely buy that… as a country somewhere would now be 100% renewables and we could all go home.

Albania, Bhutan, Costa Rica, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Iceland, Norway, Namibia, Paraguay, Tajikistan, Uruguay are all considered 100% renewable energy countries.
