Protests outside a Batley School

The Flag code says, yes they have a code

"When a flag is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner"

The guidelines for burning. yes they have guidelines for burning flags

"For individual citizens, small groups, or organisations, this should be done discreetly so the act of burning is not perceived as a protest or an act of desecration. An empty chair may be included as a "place of honour" for those lovers of Old Glory who have passed on or are to infirm to attend.

The "ceremony" will include a Chaplain or a prayer.

The flag must be burnt in a fire that includes Redwood , Oak, Cedar and Walnut

It concludes with everyone singing God Bless America.

The fucking fruitcakes, its a piece of cloth

Brilliant! I remember seeing a special bin in America when you could ‘respectfully’ dispose of flags. Odd.

So you’ll swallow whatever non-factual shite you’ve seen posted on Facebook then?
Meaning what? If you’re suggesting that it never happened and I’m repeating what I’ve seen on Facebook then you’re mistaken... I use Facebook to stay in touch with old RAF colleagues.. nothing more

If I missed your point then feel free to enlighten me

Yes, I’m suggesting it never happened and that this “The flip-side is my niece who was asked by the police to take down a flag of St.George during a football tournament because it "may offend certain residents"... She did” is just bullshit.

Some Muslim dropped his wallet in the Trafford centre and I gave it him back, he said whatever you do don't come here on Christmas Eve. What a ledge

We got anymore shite urban myths haha

It absolutely isn’t .. not sure why I’d even make that up but it won’t kill me if you can’t accept that it happened .. the police knocked and asked her to the flag down...

whether you believe what I’ve said is pretty irrelevant anyway isn’t it... and at the end of the day I really don’t give a shit.. I posted it as an illustration on how our differences are dealt with but my story changes nothing... we are often treated differently depending on our race and that ain’t gonna change

I won’t bother telling you my Stirling Moss story....

Tom Paine said "My mind is my church." So I reckon he'd be on the side of the Batley schoolteacher.

I taught for 45 years, first in England then the U.S. Retired now so have time for things like reading nearly every post on this thread. Impressed by the many thoughtful & well written arguments, especially from Rascal, Oldius, Paul Chapo and others even as they disagree with each other. My instinct is with Tom Paine, above. But i also get that it's not quite that simple. Take that other Enlightenment fellow Voltaire over in France who said of religious intolerance and fanaticism "Ecrasez l'infame!" (Crush the wicked thing.) That's the dichotomy right there, let's not tolerate intolerance, let's stamp it out, and stamp out those who preach it too. It comes all the way down to some of today's BLM protestors and rabid folk wanting to chuck statues of old white men into the river. Or I'll go further back into history and quote wise old Ersasmus, who around 1530 wrote "I see that in combating the Turks (this at a time when Christian Europe saw the Turks as the ultimate evil) we may have to become Turks ourselves." So, yes, it's complicated, but to come off the fence I'm more with Tom Paine and less with the former colleague who chastised me for sexist & patronising language when I said "thanks, luv" to one of the school's cleaning women.
