Public sector pay rise

Got my DWP ballot paper today. I'll be ticking the box that says I'm prepared to take part in strike action.

Doesn't this mean that you will have to turn up at the main entrance to the job centre at the next working day after the strike?

I work in a prison where assaults on staff are a daily occurrence. In the last ten years we’ve had 1 pay rise of 1.5%.
Starting pay for new Officers is around the national minimum pay. New Officers on this pay scale are leaving by the droves after a couple of weeks in the job.
A lot of experienced staff were given Veds (Voluntary redundancy) a few years ago, which is why the Prison service is in such a state now.
It’s being run by new, inexperienced Officers who have lost all control in the Prisons, hence why assaults on staff are a common occurrence.
You could probably get paid more in a Privately run prison, where profits go to shareholders than in a state run prison.

Brave and dedicated to even seriously apply for it. Think I've seen these advertised when looking for work in the past. HMP Exeter.

An absolute hiding to nothing by the sounds of it.

I've often thought court ushers are underpaid (NMW)for the work and responsibilities they shoulder, but in comparison prison officers get fucked up the arse and whilst someone laughs in their face.

We are going for 10 percent pay rise, pensions justice and protecting jobs and redundancy pay.
So the same thing near enough that's been attempted for the last 20 odd years then.

I'd guess these days the bargaining power with the DWP is very low, even weaker than my days.

Good luck with the fight.

I hear that Unison have accepted the £1.9k increase in local govt.

That will cover the additional cost of lighting for my garage for the year. To be fair, it is much better than I expected and it is certainly preferably to nothing.

HMPS has never recovered from the mass exodus when VEDS was offered. I’ve run into many ex colleagues (most of them train drivers who started as guards) they all look like the weight of the world has been lifted from their shoulders. The implementation of Workforce Modernisation was the start of the rot in my opinion.
