Public sector pay rise

Yep when everyone had a problem they don’t turn to a fucking banker they turn to a social worker, who has probably left their job after been under paid and over worked and under appreciated for years, then it’s the social workers fault! I don’t know how much more public services can be cut, if they for example said you must lose job in the fire service to pay for a rise then we will never ever get a rise again. We are riding 4s now when we should be riding 5 on an appliance, it’s criminal and sooner it later that is going to result in something everyone will regret, it doesn’t matter how much technology advanced you still need people to do the dirty stuff and paying people appropriately is all they ask. Fuck these politicians and their rhetoric and that’s on both sides.
I liaise daily with Manchester Social Services. It’s utterly blitzed: huge increase in referrals, fewer staff and haemorrhaging staff by the day. They can’t keep up with current caseloads and it’s getting worse by the day. Referrals that would have been taken on last year aren’t being taken, they’re being bounced back and schools are now tasked with ensuring parents who mistreat their kids are given advice about not mistreating them. Nailed on it will eventually lead to at least one serious case review and the government will trot out some glib bollocks “We’re investigating more and more in our front line services “ I was talking to a senior police woman in Lancashire last week; similar situation; hugely understaffed , morale on its arse, cases being put on back burner.
This government is a fucking disgrace

The tragic irony is that councils have already been forced to close down their early intervention services to save money and balance the budget for the statutory services.

We've already seen the stuff you describe in the child homicide cases that attract widespread media coverage.

But think of all the extra billions being poured into health, social care, police, etc. and the freedom after getting rid of those pesky EU regulations (must be true, Boris says it every week)

Just that none of it is actually improving the current day to day service
Even if it does exist

I rather suspect lots of the extra cash is being spent on paying for over priced goods and services run by companies owned by tory donors and mates of the hierarchy.

I work for Wolverhampton Council and yesterday received an email from Unison saying that the pay award on offer if £1925 increase on all scales plus an extra day of leave from 2023. Unison say they are due to meet on 29th July to discuss their next actions but I think this is an acceptable offer and unlike recent years, an increase we would actually notice in our take home pay
Members voted to accept, I did too, should be in pay packets by November.

Some people will get 10% others closer to 2%, but it is the way to go if Unions are really interested in helping the poorest.

The email I got was they are waiting for the results of all three unions involved first. I think only Unison has declared

Yes mine said exactly the same. I assume the others will vote the same way as Unison members

I work in a prison where assaults on staff are a daily occurrence. In the last ten years we’ve had 1 pay rise of 1.5%.
Starting pay for new Officers is around the national minimum pay. New Officers on this pay scale are leaving by the droves after a couple of weeks in the job.
A lot of experienced staff were given Veds (Voluntary redundancy) a few years ago, which is why the Prison service is in such a state now.
It’s being run by new, inexperienced Officers who have lost all control in the Prisons, hence why assaults on staff are a common occurrence.
You could probably get paid more in a Privately run prison, where profits go to shareholders than in a state run prison.

That’s an empathy ‘like’ I have given you for this post. Am not surprised to learn how dire the situation is, however.
