Firstly I want to say that these starting salaries are good compared to many professions however the comparison is interesting.

Public sector pay since the Tories came to power in 2010:

Police starting salary

2010: £24,000

2018: £23,000

Newly qualified teacher salary

2010: £21,500

2018: £22,000

Fully qualified nurse starting salary

2010: £22,000

2018: £22,000

MP's salary

2010: £66,000

2018: £77,000

It's shite, and it's why many are finding alternative employment. Its the country's loss in terms of talent and capability.

Sad,very sad.

It’s even more stark once you factor in inflation and housing price increases over that period. Makes the recent government announcement about public sector pay “increases” seem a bit hollow.

Are they inflation adjusted or just actual amounts?

What’s the source?

If pay increases for schools come from within school budgets it literally won’t happen.More likely other school improvement funding will be cut.

What frustrates me and many others is that the government find money for other things like cutting Disabilty benefit.

Jesus how on earth are you meant to inspire new people to be teachers with that kind of salary?

Why choose teachers from that list?

Good people are needed in each of the above occupations, and they are strugglingly badly in both recruitment and retention to find or keep hold of such.Because of the stress involved, and the fact benefits are almost none existent in terms of salary or work/life balance, seasoned, experienced, dependable and once enthusiastic, staff, cant wait to escape.
