Just stood out to me, I wasn't saying the other occupations are fairly paid.

2010 £1 will today equal £1.28.

Lets not forget the expenses that the MPs get too from the taxpayers pocket. Last year all expenses totalled £109m.

Not being funny and sorry if this offends anyone but hence why the forces go after the dumb and stupid, the econmically poor, or poorly educated when recruiting. It's the same tactic used over generations and the same in most countries. Look at Vietnam!
 
I take home less pay now than I did in 2010, because, apart from the absence of pay rises since then, I now pay for my "gold plated" pension. That's in actual pounds not "real terms". Furthermore, with cuts in budgets, I'm now doing two people's jobs. I retire next year so it wasn't worth leaving, but my best younger colleagues have drifted into the private sector and appear to be doing a bit better.

What interests me is the argument for increasing MPs pay is that "if you want the best, you have to pay..." without the self-awareness to understand that that goes for every job.

Interestingly, despite the reducing pay, when we can recruit, we're getting some really smart young kids because there are so few decent jobs for youngsters. The kicker being that, because the only certainty is reducing budgets, most of them are either fixed term appointments for a couple of years or short term appointments. That leads to the organisation expending resource training them only to lose them once their contract ends. And, of course, the employee gets no job security or pension. I guess that's market forces.

My son's in the army and it's not true that they "go after the dumb and the stupid". They go after the best they can get given the low pay and employment laws. Apart from those who, like my son, go in because they've always wanted to, you are right, it is an attractive proposition for those who are disadvantaged or not academically gifted.

Vietnam "grunts" were mostly conscripted from those groups because the rich could find ways to dodge the draft.

Lol,you haven't a clue.Recruitment and training are both selective and incredibly testing,i suspect you wouldn't have any of the attributes required.

Wouldnt want to. Having being brought up for my first 11 years moving countries, from one end to the other, living in married quarters because of the Royal Navy.
Wonder how many privates have degrees?

You think my old man came out with his GCSE/O Levels and A Levels?
Neither did most servicemen i know.

What does having a degree or even gcse's have to do with intelligence? It means nothing more than you dodged employment for a further 3 years.

What makes a man is his character,his reliability,his dependability and his reaction under pressure.The sort of man i would want to be stood next to when the shit hit the fan or i needed my back watching......and not some spineless,lentil munching,weasel who got an A+ in social economics.
