Punk and New Wave thread.

Couple of mates I went to school with Aky and Flannel formed a band out of the remnants of The Hoax with Dennis Matthews and Chris Sheridan called Emergency .
Went to Cargo studios with them to record their Points of View ep.
It’s still a great listen , they broke up not long after which was a shame , Aky went on to play bass for Molly Halfhead a toured with Iggy Pop .

I know Dennis Matthews if it's the same one ... he's a promoter at the Witchwood in Ashton , supports Leeds
I think Cargo is still a recording studio though with a different name

spent many a night at drifters
and have lots of great memories,
in particular when the girl singer from violators
(i think her name was helen)
couldn't remember the lyrics to one of the songs,
so i took the microphone of her and finished it off.
she gave me a kiss later on.

Was slightly too young for Drifters but I remember seeing ads for it in the music press including Peter and the Test Tube Babies
I didn't go to the punk gigs at Ashton Metro but my brother did (Exploited , Damned etc)

wasn't dennis previously the promoter at the mayflower before it burnt down?

saw some fantastic punk gigs there
Think that may have been too early for Dennis .
The Mayflower club , what a place that was . Saw the Dead Kennedys there never been to a more mental gig than that .
Overriding memory of the Mayflower was a Jamaican lady cooking fried chicken in the biggest stainless pot I’ve ever seen .

One and only time there seeing The Damned in 1983.

It was the roughest gig I've ever been to (and I was at The Macc Lads Milton Keynes near riot) where I felt I was going to get my head kicked in. Loads of skinheads just forced there way in, past the penioner usherettes and sweetie shop staff, and began randomly picking fights with punks. Didn't help that the place was littered with glue sniffers lying on the floor all over the foyer preventing a rapid dash out.

The good old days eh ;)

yeah, incredible gig.
one of many there.

what a time to be alive, mate.
Was going to mention DK's. Joy Div played there in 1979 too. About 3 years before I got allowed in though so missed those. My mate said it looked condemned. Another one was Leeds Queens Hall that had holes in the roof when I went there for a record fair. I preferred seeing groups in shitholes though than these arenas. The Apollo is probably about as fancy as I got.
